I think this is the ideal conversation starter and a refreshing spin on the daunting âhow have you been?â question. Itâs still casual enough that you donât feel like youâre reading index cards but can lead to tangents, possible mutual interests, and insights into a persons day to day life. Maybe theyâve started a new hobby or a good book or theyâre taking a class or they are like me and have become a total iPad baby to fill the long summer days. If someone says âugh just a lot workâ you could go in the âwhat do you wish you were doing instead?â direction and see where it leads. The best thing to pair with a conversation starter is genuine curiosity and intrigue no matter how mundane you may find the response to be. People are more willing to open up if you make them feel interesting.

âWe're long overdue in thrusting "What do you do?" into the sea forever. It's time we collectively get down to what people are interested in instead of minimizing their vibrant existence by asking how they make money.

I love to ask what people are currently âin toâ - meaning current inspirations, fixations, interests, etc.
1. Itâs subtle but revealing- I now know what you are interested in and get a hint at how you view life (ex. some interests can be perceived as narcissistic/surface level vs. thoughtful/curious) *Granted, not eveyone will have a good answer (or may not even be able to answer) and that will tell you all you need to know!!
2. Naturally we love to talk about ourselves and our passions so it will certainly keep the conversation going. Extra points for asking questions about what they say (maybe youâre interested, maybe youâre not- but at least itâs not awkward anymore)

đŤLook at them and notice something that they actively chose today. Easy ones are like clothes, bags, jewlery, makeup or whatever. But youâd probably have even better luck with like if theyâre holding a shopping bag or a book or a cup of coffee or the keychain on their keys. idk those are just the examples I thought of. But basically thatâs something intentional, so thatâs something they will have thoughts/feelings/opinions on. Ask a question or make a comment that requires them to reveal that. Like a question you would want someone in your life to ask you about something that you put energy towards, yk? Like for me I always want to talk to people about books Iâve read or that theyve read. Or when Im holding a food or drink I probably could talk about why I wanted that.
But the most important part dude. Is to gauge reaction after that. If they wanna talk more then yay. If not, you gotta let it go donât push. Itâs a them thing, not a you thing.

I wish I could re-rec with an image but this is in reply to @MARIAMARIAâs rec. I had to dig way back in my photos to 2022 and find the clay cow tools I made. Unfortunately, I abandoned them so they never got fired but maybe Iâll re-visit the project once I can afford pottery classes again.
