I recently rewatched Glee and fell back into a Darren Criss rabbit hole. Heās got this exceptional new rom-com musical that he produces and stars in, for which he originated the male lead. Simply put, I loved it. But please, please take me seriously when I say: personally, this broke me a thousand times harder than La La Land.
I donāt want to talk about it too much, because itās something thatās better to come into blindly, but Iām tellinā ya. There is a reason this won 6 out of 10 Tony nominations. There hasnāt been an original musical that has moved me this much since probably Hamilton. And that was a decade ago! For people who are part of the outcry for original material on Broadway, This. Is. It.

ša very potter musical: despite starting theatre in 3rd grade i wasn't actually invested in theatre culture until I saw Hamilton, but this stupid parody satire musical defied all that and became one of my fav shows ever and it is still up there, if anything for nostalgia.
hamilton (duh): I was obsessed in 6th grade and it truly kicked off my love of musicals and inspired me to listen and get into more shows.
falsettos: I love the themes of found family in this as well as how eccentric and quirky the characters and music is. the revival is especially fun to analyze in terms of the production sets and such!!!!
hadestown: my big flex is that i got into this before it was on Broadway and bc of that I do think the off Broadway recording is lowkey better with a better orpheus but I digress, no matter what form/version you listen to it is a beautiful and powerful adaptation of the classic myth!
the guy who didn't like musicals: another starkid musical which got me back into my love of theatre, despite me no longer actually doing theatre.
also honorable mentions for banger soundtracks: frankenstein, in the heights, jekell and hyde, bare a pop opera (PUHLEASE WATCH THE SLIME TUTORIAL WITH JONAH PLATT ON YT IT SLAPS I PROMMY), Mozart das musical (it's German and I only listen to two songs from it but those two songs are bangers even tho I have no clue what's happening), epic concept musical (jorge rivera-herrans my king), and paris the musical (it is so 80s and tacky but is hiding a few bangers)

šµI am a huge musical theatre nerd. This was the first movie I ever went to see alone at a movie theater. I was 14 years old and already a smoker, a Daniel Day Lewis die hard fan, and Marion Cotillard obsessed.
I remember I watched on a weekday after school, still in my uniform. I was the only person in the room, it was like a 2pm screening on a Wednesday.
I was so brokenhearted because of my first boyfriend and he happened to LOVE musicals as well, so I bought my ticket alone and it felt like a really big girl move, to go without him to see a movie I knew he wanted to see.
I remember crying THE WHOLE MOVIE. Literally bawling my eyes out.
I learned every song.
Years later, I auditioned with a performance of āTake It Allā for a Musical Theater Major I couldnāt sign up for because of money. Its weird because that song got me the scholarship (even tho I couldnāt go study, I did won the thing).
That day, by myself, at the movies, is a day Iāll remember forever.
