I don’t do it often. After seeing a movie with my friend last night, we participated in my ritual of going to a late night diner after to debrief. We were so invigorated by the movie we saw that we decided to sit at the counter. Talked to an older man whose main characteristic, as my friend was quick to point out, was his teal skinny scarf. Weā€˜re divided on whether or not he was hitting on us, but he was friendly all the same. We got into a long conversation shortly after with the man sitting next to us, a clocked-out waiter from another restaurant, who wanted advice on his next Substack post. He said he wrote a piece about Trader Joe’s nuts that I later found and think is actually fantastic. Should I link a stranger’s blog? Is that weird? Let me know. I have it, either way

Whenever I read a great article I love sending it around to the pals and making it ā€œgo viralā€ within my circle of friends. It’s basically like book club but short form so everybody actually reads …. And then you have something to talk about when you all hang out in real life! A few years ago we became obsessed with a New Yorker article by Gary shteyngart about his botched circumcision and we still talk about it to this day.. powerful stuff . Today my friend sent me the NYT story of the guy who lived rent-free in the New Yorker hotel for 5 years. We will have much to discuss when I see her next!!

This was a Column Named Colin (my substack) about dinner parties I had in college. I thought it was quite lovely. I wrote a little piano piece that duets along with the words.

Re-upping to taterhole with her posts yesterday — one of my menswear heroes liked a post I had written this last year. Turns out a few of my menswear heroes have liked (or combatted) some of my takes. I think it’s funny because I’m not on their league, but I can still offer some sort of perspective to the conversation; whether they agree or not is a different story. Enjoy the small, tiny influence you might have.

It’s Friday night and I’m off work late with no plans but I felt like being out in the world, even if for a moment. Turns out, a low stakes glass of orange wine tastes great when you’re waiting for a $10 burrito platter from down the street.

I’ve spent so much time scrolling on this app that I’m able to discern some of your writing voices. There are a couple of you who have such a developed voice that I can guess you wrote a post before seeing the attached username. You’re all so observant, introspective, delusional, earnest, anxious, well-rounded, hilarious and loving. Kind of breaks my heart that I’ll likely never meet some of my favorites because we all live everywhere, but I guess that’s why we thank God for the Internet!

Iā€˜ve always been an adamant listener of music while on walks, at a cafe, etc. but recently I’ve feeling more anxious, more disconnected than usual. Not listening to music has helped me feel significantly more grounded, more aware of my surroundings, connected to the world around me. Also, strangers will definitely be more inclined to speak to you if they know you can hear them. If you’re into that sort of thing.
