Whenever I read a great article I love sending it around to the pals and making it “go viral” within my circle of friends. It’s basically like book club but short form so everybody actually reads …. And then you have something to talk about when you all hang out in real life!
A few years ago we became obsessed with a New Yorker article by Gary shteyngart about his botched circumcision and we still talk about it to this day.. powerful stuff . Today my friend sent me the NYT story of the guy who lived rent-free in the New Yorker hotel for 5 years. We will have much to discuss when I see her next!!

I don’t do it often. After seeing a movie with my friend last night, we participated in my ritual of going to a late night diner after to debrief. We were so invigorated by the movie we saw that we decided to sit at the counter. Talked to an older man whose main characteristic, as my friend was quick to point out, was his teal skinny scarf. We‘re divided on whether or not he was hitting on us, but he was friendly all the same. We got into a long conversation shortly after with the man sitting next to us, a clocked-out waiter from another restaurant, who wanted advice on his next Substack post. He said he wrote a piece about Trader Joe’s nuts that I later found and think is actually fantastic. Should I link a stranger’s blog? Is that weird? Let me know. I have it, either way

I am in several group chats, but there is one that has my full heart right now. It is the “Writer Posse” group chat — it consists of NYT’s Joe Coscarelli, VF’s Nate Freeman, VF’s Dan Adler, Writer/Editor of Sex Mag and more Zack Sokol, NY/DC legend Jay Bugler, Reporter Extrordinaire Ezra Marcus, and yours truly. We’re all unfairly talented — deadass though, name another crew of men as sharp as us in the mediasphere — and we enjoy what we do. We support each other, we ride for each other, we hold each other accountable. Coscarelli and Bulger took me aside a few months ago just to keep me, definitely the wildest one in the group (if you can believe it or not), more focused and it was much appreciated. We’re men. We’re fucking men. Group chats are great. Never post anything; you post in the group chat, and the boys tell you if your head is in the right direction or if this hot take needs some work.

dont treat your shit like it’s disposable! . My laptop is old as hell and doesn’t work unless it’s plugged into a wall, but you know what I am proud that I cared for it like the finely arranged clump of precious metals and plastics that it is instead of like something I have to upgrade because there’s been 10 new versions in the last 8 years I’ve had it. In fact it makes me a fucking saint. I also always hang dry my undies so they don’t stretch out and get holes in them from heat damage. Things will last if you invest just a modicum of care into them..additionally it feels really nice to be able to point to a hideous Victoria’s Secret thong on the drying rack and say “I’ve had that for 14 years”. Also probably in 2 more years gen alpha kids will point to my laptop and call it “vintage”, so that’s something to look forward to. Ok Rec over

This is a key rec for any context in which you need to burn a few hours by yourself, especially at a bar, coffee shop, restaurant, etc. where you dont just want to be staring into space. Bring a bunch of postcards or stationery and stamps to the bar, camp out at the best people-watching table in the corner, order a little drinky, and write out some postcards about your day to your friends. (pro tip: you probably have their addresses saved in Google maps)
This is one of my favorite things to do when traveling alone...kill several birds with one stone by 1) sending sweet little trip updates to the besties back home 💌 2) burning a few hours when you don’t know what to do with yourself 🕰️ 3) looking busy while enjoying a bev in a nice place 🍸 4) getting off that damn phone for a bit 📴
