there's a deep sincerity that comes with talking to someone new to a scene or meeting new people in a hobby or space you enjoy that i feel is lost in the cynicism and inherent negativity of most social media platforms (present company excluded) and i think getting outside and meeting new people in your community is a really beautiful thing that more people should do

I don't want someone else to tell me a story about you. I don't want an algorithm shaping my perspective of my fellow humans. I don't want some gatekeepers to season my ears with a pre-determined narrative about the others in the world. My overriding experience is that people, when face to face and doing life together, are far better human beings than we've been led to believe. Much of our division simply comes from the fact that we don't talk to one another. So my driving passion, in different spaces, is to pursue and cultivate those kind of communities. Partly it involves getting out from behind our screens and getting in real life physical spaces together—or at least in realtime. It involves inviting people to reclaim the voice that's been stolen from them, or that they've surrendered. It requires a difficult and willful setting aside of what I think I know about you and what you think you know about me.

Been finding myself spend more and more time online in niche Discord communities, like the PI.FYI book club and some music related groups. smaller communities means people are more likely to handle disagreements like adults (or leave), no algorithms so toxic waste doesn’t get promoted for eNgAgEmEnT or whatever, and normal folks talking about genuinely cool stuff they like. it’s nice! the other plus side is some of the bigger “viral” events make it into those spaces occasionally so I’m not totally culturally insulated, but I’m also not frantically trying to figure out more about Today’s Main Character like I used to on Twitter/X. just some nice spaces I get choose when and how to engage with.

i'm new!! hi!! stumbled on here after seeing someone on twitter mention this in passing!! this is a very lovely place. everything has been so cruel and hateful and mean lately. you'd think given how hard life already is, warm and kind spaces like this would be more common. oh well. it does make things feel more special :) i'm very shy, and honestly, nothing cool goes on in my life so i doubt i'd be able to rec interesting things. after struggling with my younger years, i feel like i'm only now starting to find the things i like and catching up with everyone else :o especially in terms of art and books and film and games and... everything!! this is kind of embarrassing to admit (it's okay though because anonymity is awesome), but i am only now forming a personality!! it's nice to be here though. very good vibes. lurking here is just as great because it doesn't feel like "doomscrolling" nice to meet you all!! hello!!

complimenting strangers is such a fulfilling experience thats adds some positivity to both you and a strangers day, i think a lot of people are afraid of the other person thinking that they're weird or smth but how many times have you received a passing compliment and thought it was weird prolly not very often not to mention you'll prolly never see them again and you only live once
