Been finding myself spend more and more time online in niche Discord communities, like the PI.FYI book club and some music related groups. smaller communities means people are more likely to handle disagreements like adults (or leave), no algorithms so toxic waste doesn’t get promoted for eNgAgEmEnT or whatever, and normal folks talking about genuinely cool stuff they like. it’s nice!
the other plus side is some of the bigger “viral” events make it into those spaces occasionally so I’m not totally culturally insulated, but I’m also not frantically trying to figure out more about Today’s Main Character like I used to on Twitter/X. just some nice spaces I get choose when and how to engage with.

dirtyturk yeah, this is def the other edge of the sword with Discord: it rules because you need the invite link to get in, but also it’s tough to find invite links. I‘m a longtime Stereogum reader, and one of their paid supporter perks is a Discord server, which is where I spend most of my time. I’ve seen a few other websites/communities I follow offer this perk for subscribers as well, so if you’re already supporting some creators online it might be worth seeing if there’s already some you could have access to. these PI.FYI-adjacent servers are open to everyone, though! I have been on the internet from such a young age, probably younger than I should have been allowed. I‘ve always found myself immersed in online communities such as Discord and stan twitter (not my proudest moment), but it’s been a while since I’ve done that. An online community was crucial to me growing up, especially during lockdown, and I guess it will always seem to be something I crave. It’s only been a few days since I‘ve joined and theres already familiar characters I see frequently on this site. It feels very reminiscent of the old community I had on stan twitter without the toxicity, which I appreciate now that I have grown up.

there's a deep sincerity that comes with talking to someone new to a scene or meeting new people in a hobby or space you enjoy that i feel is lost in the cynicism and inherent negativity of most social media platforms (present company excluded) and i think getting outside and meeting new people in your community is a really beautiful thing that more people should do

I’ve become so passive on all other social media. I only sort of use instagram and TikTok. Someone on TT actually recommended this app (I should probably find him). I was interested because I felt like it was harder for me to find new music and I was hoping to find some good stuff, which I have!
This has been a pleasant surprise. I’m so grateful for this space. I haven’t had random internet friends for a long time, and I didn’t even realize how much I missed it! I love connecting over shared interests and ideas. I love that I can be as anonymous as I want. I‘ve only been here a few weeks and feel it’s brought with it fresh creativity.
Personally, I’m more home bound than ever before, so this is my equivalent to getting out and socializing with people (which I still do IRL, just not daily in this way). Thanks for being my friends!! 💗
