An anthemic closing track to their excellent new LP, Spiral in a Straight Line. It's cool to hear them reunite with Julien Baker after she was featured on another track eight years ago; she adds so much to this new one, too.

☆ TILT (2/17/25) ☆ There's a bit of haunting dissonance to this that I love. If you've seen Twin Peaks: The Return, you know :) Link to the song on YouTube

re:stacks off bon iver’s For Emma- such a heavy album, but this song marks a final change in theme before the record wraps up: leaves listeners with a twinge of hope after so much grief. i’ve carried that hope with me for years now. if you listen closely, you can hear justin vernon set down his guitar and walk out of the studio as the album ends. a perfect tender moment also f mono 😔☝️

my favorite ending for an album that i feel, is in large part, about the various modalities of longing and lament. it feels weary and wise, almost recollective like one might be at the end of a life. reminds me of a stanley kunitz poem 💙

An incredible, genre-defying film from Johnnie To that uses Judo as the philosophical foundation for its story of three people looking for more out of life. You see them thrown to the ground repeatedly in its 95 mins, but more than anything, it's a film about the importance of getting back up. Over, and over, and over. It features a deftly hidden twist and a couple incredibly dynamic sequences (the arcade scene and the night club centerpiece) that I had to rewind and watch again. Outstanding cinematography and inventive choreography in almost every scene, whether it's 4 conversations woven together at once or a 1-on-1 Judo match in the tall grass.

It's 20 minutes of shredding and lyrics about climate change anxiety, and I listen to the whole thing every time. Linked: the live performance I saw of it a month ago in Portland, fittingly, during a torrential downpour.
