shoutouts to severance s2e10 for introducing me to this. never have i seen a licensed song selected for any media that so closely tracks the themes of the work - down to specific coincidental references to “autumn leaves turning to the color of her hair.” i have had this song basically on repeat since the finale, plumbing it for deeper meaning and connections to the show and it continues to give and give and give

there is something so cool about this unspoken juxtaposition rule in the more psychologically volatile genres, where the lyrics are bleak and anxious, always tapping into darker territory, but the melody remains beautiful and oddly comforting. i have been re-looping lots of carissa’s wierd - songs about leaving lately, and now this thought refuses to leave me alone. idk!!!! it’s just such a common case where something viscerally crushing happens to produce the most tender and fragile sounds, and i know it is a bit of a cornplate-level observation, but i have been pondering a lot about this

This is my second Lady Gaga "Today I Listened To" and surely not my last. I think many people have been nostalgic for the music of the mid-2000s as we plunge headfirst into all of the heartbreak and chaos that 2025 is bringing.
Enter "Abracadabra", a teaser for the upcoming LG7 album, that I really just chalked up as a fun, energetic dance song at first. But after listening to the song several times and coming across a TikTok video analyzing some of the lyrics, I feel like this is the perfect anthem for the concept of Joy as Resistance.
The etymology of the word "abracadabra" is "I will create as I speak". In the face of adversity, we have no choice but to create the world we want to live in, molding ourselves into who we want to be without input from anyone else.
We have to "keep our mind on the distance" — the life we crave and desire for us and others — "when the Devil turns around”.
