i have yet to be able to sit still and turn off my mind and meditate the traditional way, but i’m a big believer in finding physical actions that allow one to enter that zone…i know when i’m active with my hands when drawing or playing an instrument, my brain enters a different state thats soothing and is the only time where no other thoughts are coming into my head. i have a friend that doesn’t eat sweets but she loves baking treats because the actions relax her. my uncle is a surfer and he says surfing is the only time he feels his brain is totally clear of any other thoughts. i don't garden but i imagine those that do find that space too…

It's a common misconception that meditation clears your head of thoughts. It's not a realistic goal because mostly meditation is the opposite of that. What it is is learning to watch your thoughts from a distance without them taking control of you. You still have them but you dont identify with them instinctively. Of course the longer you meditate you can have those moments of space and they can become longer and blissful with practice but the nature of the mind is that the second you notice that, it's gone already. When your thoughts dont sweep you along as easily, your gut isn't reacting to every impulse anymore, because you have this new ability to sit back and observe. That just means to listen to your thoughts in a more allowing, forgiving, non judgemental, non reactive-mentality and then that can start to transfer into how you deal with other people and life situations when you've had the practice to yourself first. But you do have to learn to do that for yourself first for it to come from a genuine place and not from the reactive ego and past trauma. In the beginning it can be very hard because we haven't done it. Just like any skill it takes time to build. It's also because a lot of us do actively avoid our thoughts and feelings in order to not face certain things about ourselves that are holding us back. We fear the unknown more than a harmful known, but the only way to truly let go and make space for something new is to acknowledge and move through the pain of whats real and what isn't, whats serving us and whats a disservice to a good life.

If you have something in your life (literally in any form) that brings you outside of yourself and brings you to a state of peace, hold on to that. Realize that this is your form of mediation and stick to it regularly. My life is moving very fast and I lose sight of those things sometimes, and when I do I go insane. Right now my meditation is being in Ableton or Blender but I want to get back into regular mediation in nature since Ableton and Blender are also my career now lol.

doesn’t matter if it’s 5 or 20 minutes. Sit down, ground yourself, clear your head, move on with your day.
It’s really impressive how creative I’ve become since I started meditating (more or less) regularly.
It basically clears my head and gives my brain space to expand

I’ve been meditating consistently for the first time in over a year and I feel like a big part of it is finding a good mix of traditional meditation and activities that put me in a meditative state (going for a walk, bird watching, water colors, reading tarot)
