I grew up making fun of my dad for always packing fishy smelly things in his work lunch like tuna, sardines, deviled ham, etc. But last time I was at the local Aldi, I took a gamble on some cheaply priced canned fish items. Lo and behold... the 'dines (pronounced "deens") were goddamn delicious. I used a video aid (pictured) to make sure I was doing it correctly. I also tried some canned smoked oysters, which were equally great. I feel this kind of character development is so very important for people of all ages. I spent most of my life thinking they were cat food at best. But I visited Clydes one day for bivalves and martinis and tried their new conservas menu. Now I am watching tinned fish reviews and eating all kinds of sardines.

maggie nelson says “loneliness is solitude with a problem” and wrote about how if one does one’s solitude right, the prize is an ability to love without losing yourself entirely. this has really helped me reframe how i see the past few years of feeling lonely and my discomfort with being single - these days i’ve been sorta leaning into my “solitude” and just really working on coming back to myself and my identity, and trying to see myself as whole even while on my own + appreciating the platonic love i already have in my life
