Hello you. How do you do ? Do you read these words ? Whose voice do you hear ? Does your phone feel heavy ? Did you do the thing yet ? Hush. Ground yourself. Now matters. Now was a second ago. Stretch out, let your body take up space. Deep breath. Now commit to being alive.

This takes less than a minute. I do this mostly when I’m in nature or other beautiful surroundings. I say one thing I observe in the environment for each of the five senses. For example, I smell the salty ocean air, I feel the breeze on my face, I hear the birds singing, etc. Doing this causes me to slow down and really take in the present moment.

It’s hard but refreshingly powerful to take your eyes off the screen and experience your environment. Sounds, smells, reading facial expressions. Touch surfaces, the table infront of you, maybe the stool you’re sitting on. Try to describe the texture as detailed as possible. We’re often overstimulated visually from all the screen time but there are four more senses (actually seven, counting the perception of temperature, movement as well as your sense of balance) waiting to be fed. Next time you’re early for your lunch date, don’t stare at your phone. Use this precious moment to look around.
