I recently rewatched Glee and fell back into a Darren Criss rabbit hole. He’s got this exceptional new rom-com musical that he produces and stars in, for which he originated the male lead. Simply put, I loved it. But please, please take me seriously when I say: personally, this broke me a thousand times harder than La La Land.
I don’t want to talk about it too much, because it’s something that’s better to come into blindly, but I’m tellin’ ya. There is a reason this won 6 out of 10 Tony nominations. There hasn’t been an original musical that has moved me this much since probably Hamilton. And that was a decade ago! For people who are part of the outcry for original material on Broadway, This. Is. It.

I love musicals!! There is nothing more americana than a corny movie adaptation of an even cornier broadway musical :’)
Their spirit overcomes their technical shortcomings! And you can get lost in the sauce of incredulous technicolor costuming and dance numbers. I just watched Bye Bye Birdie (1963) and it was so bad in all the right ways, can’t recommend enough!

It perfectly encapsulates the nostalgia of what summer always feels like it’s going to be, but somehow never is, in the depths of winter. Even if you hate musicals, it’s a must watch just for how feel-good it is. Especially if you are a woman, the mother and daughter storyline is just the right amount of heart-tugging to bring depth to the sunlit, giddy, and earworm-inducing songs and scenes of the film. I love a profound, intellectual movie as much as the next person, but when the world feels too serious (as it often does), it’s time to pop on Mamma Mia.

This song is a portal to making you feel romantic and included in an industry that doesn’t care about you!!!! It sweeps and it moans and it makes your heart swell! Gives you chills and reminds you there’s a reason you’re trying to be an actor!!! Like maybe you made the right choice!!!! This song is hope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
