Nothing I write here will do this film justice. I first saw it earlier this year and fell in love with it upon first watch. I pirated and viewed it on my laptop, in bed, with snot running down my nose. In June, I had the pleasure of watching it on a big screen during a Splat!FilmFest in a local cinema. I brought a friend, and I may have cried twice as hard. I can't believe this film was made in the 60s. I can't believe Jon Voight is a right-wing maniac at his grown age, having previously (and maybe unassumingly) played a queer character. The way this thing is shot makes you think Schlesinger set a whole new pathway for capturing film, the one we are more familiar with in the 21st century. Midnight Cowboy forever !!!!

Never watched this until now. Very surprised this is not really considered apart of the queer canon. Really sad and beautiful film with incredible editing, soundtrack, dp work, and performances. Seems like the director was a one hit wonder, as this was his only acclaimed film. Highly recommending watching with friends. Really captures how cold and uninviting New York can be, especially if you’re new to it.

I think Laura Marling grabbed Cohen by his lyrical balls. I'm not saying it just because I'm name-biased, I promise. My friend, who is a big indie-folk-head, has been trying to get me into her music for months now. I've caved, and of course, I started with the one called like me. It happened to be a response song. I knew of Alexandra Leaving, mostly because my dad collected Leonard Cohen's music compilations like somebody was paying him to do it. And I am fond of Cohen myself. By the time I learned to speak and listen, I’m sure we were both walking in circles around the house humming Suzanne or Is This What You Wanted. But now, after years, I finally know where Alexandra went after she left. I love Laura's voice. I love her jangly, untidy, Crosby, Stills, and Nash-reminiscent guitar playing. I love love love that she gave this woman a chance to be more than a projection of a great music man.
