I mean you take a flyer on it and maybe you get it and maybe you don't. Certainly just keep in mind that you want things that fit you culturally/interest wise. Like there's legit no point moving if you don't have outside things of work that you want to explore. You know what those kind of things speak the most to you. You might wish you're home, but you might find a new one or you can just move back. Cuz from my experience doing this and getting one of those jobs, you may not necessarily move back home, when you have the opportunity to do so.

take the advice of family and friends to heart but if you still feel the same after hearing it just do what you want. you are free to make your own decisions. hopefully it works out, but if it doesn’t, there’s nothing wrong with making and learning from your own mistakes.
i’ve posted abt this before but my family told me the exact same thing after i said the exact same thing abt my last job. the good part was after i told them i was 100% going to do it, they gave me tons of advice on quitting and how to prep for getting a new job. they will be there for you either way. luckily for me it worked out even better than i could’ve wished for and ive been way happier in my new position. i hope the same goes for you

Nothing is forever—one way or another, you’ll quit this job someday. So why not now? Frame it as a mid-career break if that helps.
That said—one income households are rare for a reason. Short-term it’s no big deal, but talk to your partner about what you’ll do if your project doesn’t become an asset. & be so, so, so careful about becoming financially dependent on your partner long term.
We believe in you. Do it for the plot!

i’ve worked in the arts for my entire career, mainly in art museums. i’m also an independent curator and ran a gallery out of my storefront apartment for a year and a half. i’ve archived photographs, led museum tours, curated exhibitions, couriered art across the country in an 18-wheeler, written wall texts, edited books, interviewed artists, fundraised, done countless studio visits, written exhibition essays, provided accessibility for disabled visitors, built a curatorial practice around working with disabled artists, project managed performances, and participated as a performer in a couple of pieces (including a Tino Sehgal).
i am immensely proud of my work and have done and seen some incredible things. i’ve also worked with incredible passionate people who have the privilege and honor of making culture. but I’m also very burnt out and currently in the midst of plotting a departure from the art world, in search of a job that provides more balance. my whole job as a ā€œmuseum workerā€ has been my identity for 14 years and I’m curious to see what my life looks like next. i’m mediating on and grappling with the idea that we weren’t put on this planet to labor, which compounded with the effects of lockdown and the pandemic, has changed my relationship to work and having a linear career. life is too short and too precious to give all of ourselves to a job (hope that doesn’t make me sound far out or too radical).
right now I’m working with a career coach, doing informational interviews, playing with my resume and cover letter formats, and applying for a wild array of non-art / non-museum jobs. I’d love to hear if you have any insights or suggestions! it’s scary making the leap but I’m trusting my gut here.

Even if you end up having to go somewhere else, there still will be culture to get involved in, people to meet, things to learn, realizations to be made. All of that is still right there for you and it will be open in a way you won't even realize until you've done like a year or two. So it's truly still exciting times. As long as you feel generally good about the place you ultimately choose, your time is coming.
