I was 4 and it was my first time visiting Serbia; the whole trip my family called me Å”eÄer because I loved eating sugar cubes off the table. It was August and it was sweltering and I wasnāt used to having no air conditioning. I ran around shirtless in denim sandals and played in the hose and the river and ate massive slices of watermelon larger than my head and sweeter than candy.
We took a drive to visit our extended family in a rural area where they always served a bubbling pot of fish stew with all the bones and bits in it. They served me ice cream and told me, in English, that it was very hot. I still get the words hot and cold mixed up in Serbian. One of my relatives french braided my hair for the first time. I was always fussy about having my hair even brushed but I had never experienced scalp pain like that before.
I remember watching the Simpson and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles dubbed poorly in English. I remember plates of the best food Iād ever tasted and cakes as soft as clouds. I remember playing with my cousins and being fawned over in a language I only knew a handful of words in. I remember drinking fresh spring water under the mulberry tree. I remember the colorful rooms and cracked stone streets and Cyrillic graffiti and dogs and cats roaming the graveyard. I remember my Nana and my Deda and my Dad looking so excited to show me their homeland for the first time.

i think most americans donāt know this is a country (no offense guys) but #itexistsā¦ thereās some places that are more touristy than others obviously and imho kinda shit so let me provide you with a listā¦
brijuni - this is where i want my commune to be itās a national park but you can stay there and itās actually the most perfect place ever. its 14 tiny islands and it used to be titoās summer residence korÄula - cute island and i donāt think a lot of people go there? vis - another gem. GREAT FOOD. oh my god i had the best octopus of my life there and the island is covered in lavender fields and the beaches are beautiful loÅ”inj - veeery gorgeous island once again the whole istria region - best food best everything but particularly the best beaches are in Rt Kamenjak bc its a protected area. Motovun is also a tiny city on top of a hill in istria where u can eat any food imaginable with truffles. 10/10 hospitality tbh (+ istria is home to the official smallest town in the world called hum) all in all id say you could rent a car and drive along the coast but yeah the islands are just something elseā¦ iād generally just rec the smaller ones bc thereās way less people visiting those also in terms of culture - youāll find pieces of history everywhere you go. and foodā¦ oh the foodā¦ usually the best food is in the tiniest local restaurants bc they always get everything locally and you can actually taste that itās real food

This was my first trip out of the country once I got my green card. My wife and I wandered the streets safely, ate more carbs than we should have while losing weight (???), looked at art and buildings that were around when Rome was still running gladiator battles, and met strangers for drinks at a bar and stayed there for 6 hours talking about life. Truly my fave trip. We did Florence and Rome andā¦errrrā¦I forget the name but itās the place with all the islands. 10/10 trip. Reach out if you need any recs.
