i think most americans don’t know this is a country (no offense guys) but #itexists… there’s some places that are more touristy than others obviously and imho kinda shit so let me provide you with a list…
brijuni - this is where i want my commune to be it’s a national park but you can stay there and it’s actually the most perfect place ever. its 14 tiny islands and it used to be tito’s summer residence
korčula - cute island and i don’t think a lot of people go there?
vis - another gem. GREAT FOOD. oh my god i had the best octopus of my life there and the island is covered in lavender fields and the beaches are beautiful
lošinj - veeery gorgeous island once again
the whole istria region - best food best everything but particularly the best beaches are in Rt Kamenjak bc its a protected area. Motovun is also a tiny city on top of a hill in istria where u can eat any food imaginable with truffles. 10/10 hospitality tbh (+ istria is home to the official smallest town in the world called hum)
all in all id say you could rent a car and drive along the coast but yeah the islands are just something else… i’d generally just rec the smaller ones bc there’s way less people visiting those
also in terms of culture - you’ll find pieces of history everywhere you go. and food… oh the food… usually the best food is in the tiniest local restaurants bc they always get everything locally and you can actually taste that it’s real food

Better food and beaches than the Cyclades islands most people flock to and less expensive overall. There’s plenty for history buffs (Knossos Palace) and old town Chania is beautiful and romantic to walk around. I recommend renting a car to drive around and explore (just get an international drivers license before you leave) or else there’s public transit. The tavernas also give complimentary dessert and a shot of raki after dinner. This might be customary throughout the rest of Greece also, but the hospitality in Crete was outstanding. If this one big island isn’t enough for you, you can day trip to other smaller surrounding islands or little coastal fishing villages via ferry. 10/10 destination, seriously look into it

This is my #1 recommendation when helping plan Italy trips for friends. True, there are some beautiful sights to behold if you climb the ghastly hills with the hordes of tourists-mostly honeymooners which bum out married and single people alike. But I promise there are so many other Insta-worthy spots where you won’t have to risk major motion sickness getting there only to spend €40 for the worst “lemon” risotto (also don’t eat risotto south of Florence).
Go to the volcanic islands of Ischia and Procida (picture below of Procida- where the houses are actually colorful!) Go to the Ionian and Adriatic beaches in Puglia! Go to the caves of Matera! There are national parks that look like Colorado but you can eat the best and cheapest pizza while you’re there! The most wonderful people and places can be found in this country but NOT in Positano with the couple from Nassau County guzzling cappuccinos.
