Better food and beaches than the Cyclades islands most people flock to and less expensive overall. There’s plenty for history buffs (Knossos Palace) and old town Chania is beautiful and romantic to walk around. I recommend renting a car to drive around and explore (just get an international drivers license before you leave) or else there’s public transit. The tavernas also give complimentary dessert and a shot of raki after dinner. This might be customary throughout the rest of Greece also, but the hospitality in Crete was outstanding. If this one big island isn’t enough for you, you can day trip to other smaller surrounding islands or little coastal fishing villages via ferry. 10/10 destination, seriously look into it
