Better food and beaches than the Cyclades islands most people flock to and less expensive overall. Thereās plenty for history buffs (Knossos Palace) and old town Chania is beautiful and romantic to walk around. I recommend renting a car to drive around and explore (just get an international drivers license before you leave) or else thereās public transit. The tavernas also give complimentary dessert and a shot of raki after dinner. This might be customary throughout the rest of Greece also, but the hospitality in Crete was outstanding. If this one big island isnāt enough for you, you can day trip to other smaller surrounding islands or little coastal fishing villages via ferry. 10/10 destination, seriously look into it

vis - another gem. GREAT FOOD. oh my god i had the best octopus of my life there and the island is covered in lavender fields and the beaches are beautiful

the whole istria region - best food best everything but particularly the best beaches are in Rt Kamenjak bc its a protected area. Motovun is also a tiny city on top of a hill in istria where u can eat any food imaginable with truffles. 10/10 hospitality tbh (+ istria is home to the official smallest town in the world called hum)
all in all id say you could rent a car and drive along the coast but yeah the islands are just something elseā¦ iād generally just rec the smaller ones bc thereās way less people visiting those
also in terms of culture - youāll find pieces of history everywhere you go. and foodā¦ oh the foodā¦ usually the best food is in the tiniest local restaurants bc they always get everything locally and you can actually taste that itās real food

This is my #1 recommendation when helping plan Italy trips for friends. True, there are some beautiful sights to behold if you climb the ghastly hills with the hordes of tourists-mostly honeymooners which bum out married and single people alike. But I promise there are so many other Insta-worthy spots where you wonāt have to risk major motion sickness getting there only to spend ā¬40 for the worst ālemonā risotto (also donāt eat risotto south of Florence).
Go to the volcanic islands of Ischia and Procida (picture below of Procida- where the houses are actually colorful!) Go to the Ionian and Adriatic beaches in Puglia! Go to the caves of Matera! There are national parks that look like Colorado but you can eat the best and cheapest pizza while youāre there! The most wonderful people and places can be found in this country but NOT in Positano with the couple from Nassau County guzzling cappuccinos.

I just watched āFace/Offā for the first time a few days ago and feel like Iāve filled a void in my life that I wasnāt even aware of. If you like a heavy dose of action in your comfort cinema, I highly recommend. Like most movies from the 90s, not everything has aged well but cast aside your modern judgments for a bit and just enjoy Nicolas Cage doing The Most.

Long live the Notes app, but nothing beats just writing something down right as it pops into your head. To serve the sense of urgency at all times, one will inevitably collect a large and eclectic array of notebooks and notepads. I am considering getting one of those slates that scuba divers use to communicate underwater and keeping it in the shower.
