he’s a legend for a reason. he died last year and i made a playlist of all my fav tunes of his. 100% instrumental - his melodies are so rich he doesn’t need to sing. “definitely maybe“ could be one of my fav songs ever - it’s like 7 layers of slide guitar that are so pretty you’ll cry - also this vid from the 70s is nuts

You ever bring up Steely Dan around someone you thought you knew and loved and they start saying things like “well you gotta check out Donald Fagen’s solo work!” It happened to me. I spent all of December listening to nothing but Steely Dan. It was really dark. I listened to Gaucho four times in a row on an Amtrak. Anyways I’m normal again now, back to listening to other music. But Steely Dan? Pretty good.

A very specific obsession. An unmistakable sound; nobody else plays like Stevie, which is why he shows up on so many other artists’ songs. Probably out of sync with most people's mental lists but here’s my top five: 1. Chaka Khan "I Feel For You"  2. “Boogie On Reggae Woman” 3. Eurythmics "There Must Be An Angel"  4. "Isn't She Lovely"  5. "That Girl" (there's a drop in the solo that's THE sampled hook for the 2Pac track “So Many Tears”)

The man responsible for dozens of Teenage Symphonies to God "Sad songs about happy things" (the first time, as a kid, I can recall the sweet/sour combo of melodies that could make you cry attached to songs about endless, bottomless love) I've long since lost track of how many weddings and funerals I've attended that have featured this song; suffice it to say, "a lot." God only knows what we'd been without him 🙏🏻

Hey tyler hopefully this doesn’t violate some PI.FYI golden rule But after nearly two years of writing, editing and arguing, my book about the EP is coming out in May and can be preordered here:
https://hozacrecords.com/product/aifl/
The book is about the origins, history and cultural impact of the EP since these little objects first started coming out in the 50s. Over 50 of my music biz friends then helped me shape the list and review the top 200 ever released, according to us (ha). For those of you who are into this kind of geekery/snobbery, I can’t wait to hear what you think. A labor of love, as all books are! ❤️
