a lot of these are not that critically acclaimed but they are still really fun watches!
1. SAVING FACE (2008): it is a really touching film which is set in flushing ny, it is centred around a young Chinese woman and her exploration of her sexuality. surprisingly a very easy watch but also very heartfelt.
2. FRANCES HA (2013): a bit basic but still amazing, the main character which is played by Greta Gerwig navigates feeling lost in her 20s. me and my best friend quote this movie all the time.
3. COOL RUNNINGS (1993): i grew up with this movie always in the background, it is such a classic. very funny premise: based around a jamaican bobsledding team. very lovable characters, it is a comfort watch 100%.
4. SAVE THE LAST DANCE (2001): it is def a guilty pleasure watch, it's not critically acclaimed but when has that ever stopped me. great soundtrack, vibes overall are so comforting. the storyline is very predictable but like idc.
5. 50/50 (2011): as much as i don't like joseph gordon levit, this movie is so funny and heartfelt.
6. SHE'S THE MAN (2006): when i was 14 i had to run a play in my class and we got assigned shakespeare's twelvth night, and my teacher said to watch this movie. it is such a funny movie, again quite a guilty pleasure watch but so good.
7. INTO THE WILD (2008): this rec is quite film bro but the true story it is based on was a hyperfixation of mine for years. it is a dramatic retelling of the life of chris mc candless (made my dad cry which is not an easy feat)
8. UNE FILLE FACILE (2019): set in cannes and follows two cousins. speaks a lot to female relationships and may be my fav on the list. i won't spoil anything here, i just love it and you should watch it (it is also very beautiful)
9. THE HAND OF GOD (2021): set in 1980s napoli, follows a boy and his love for football as well as his complicated family life. such a gorgeous film

With my visiting older relative because I found out she’s Chalamet-pilled after taking her to see A Complete Unknown (do not really recommend but it did make me inexplicably horny despite being such a bland movie but maybe it was the guest-hosting-induced involuntary celibacy) and she is culturally impoverished so I had to get something of some substance in. On New Year’s Eve she made us watch Holidate despite the fact that she had already seen it and she told us the entire plot during the first ten minutes then proceeded to explain everything that was about to happen throughout the movie. Luckily there wasn’t a lot to spoil there and the viewing experience could not have been worse to begin with. Have yet to watch Babygirl which is unjust but I will remediate this. Apologies for the stream-of-consciousness tangent I’m still processing

I liked it but I actually didn’t love this movie as much as I hoped I would after having heard about it for years. Given my name, I did laugh at the Hooters-esque restaurant she worked at being called Big Taters (her sleazy boss there was a major highlight to me). The fashion was like a time capsule of early 2010s style in the most hilarious way and the character archetypes in her friend group felt very familiar. The lead actress really carries the weight of the film and she does it remarkably well.
The execution left something to be desired… I definitely prefer its spiritual companion, Under the Silver Lake by far. It took that same conspiratorial concept of the dark underbelly of Hollywood but ran with it in a much more strange and fantastical direction. but Starry Eyes is fine for what it is—a pre-me-too scathing indictment of the Hollywood system in horror wrapping.

being traditionally cool is really quite boring and iterative, and it’s actually very cool and sexy to geek out about something you like or share bits of knowledge on a topic you’re passionate about

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WORKER’S DAY!!!! i love having a union, i love being a union steward and getting to support my unit. when my union won its contract, i got a pay bump, better benefits, and increased protection as a worker. 🥳 unions help address racial and gender pay gaps, issues workplaces impose on families and those having kids, addressing unsafe conditions, plus things like better health insurance, wages and overtime, weingarten rights to representation, and more!!! if you don’t have a union but are thinking about forming one, check out AFL-CIO’s page (linked) or Emergency Workplace Organizing Committee. there’s always more power in a union!! ✊🥖🌹
