buy books with someone else’s annotations. pick up old cook books for a couple bucks. check which pages have the most wear and tear, try those first. buy cheap sunglasses and antique jewelry. I buy almost all my clothes from thrift stores or vintage shops. I have furnished my dorms and apartments through thrifted plates, silverware, and other decor. almost everything is better quality than what gets made today.

I love thrift stores. I think the clothes and the items have so much more story and meaning.

I love thrifting when Iā€˜m having trouble finding stuff on clearance, which has been the case lately. the places I went to get these are: Goodwill, Plato’s Closet, and Simply Chic. being able to diy/find accessories for these and styling outfits around them will be sm fun 😁

Trawl through Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, Nextdoor, OfferUp, Buy Nothing, eBay, etc; go to thrift and antique stores, estate sales (look for online estate auctions that are local to you too), flea markets; buy prints from local galleries; pick up random junk that catches your eye from off of the street but be wary of bugs. If you want something distinctive, unique, and well-made for a more affordable price that’s the way to go. (If you wanted to get spendy I would say 1stDibs but I don’t even shop on there because who am I, Norman Rockefeller)

I just read the book "the world is on fire but we're still buying shoes." A short little read about how to be better shoppers in this environment. FUCK AMAZON if you've gotta satisfy your urge to get some cool new garb or stuff for around the house buy from local thrift stores and vintage stores! Just picked up the headboard of my dreams at Goodwill. Better for your wallet, too. Plus it's cool to be like "oh this? It's secondhand."

this summer, we’re starting yoga, we’re learning a new language (being bilingual is now the standard, you need to know at least three to be truly chic), we’re going to concerts just because the tickets were cheap, we’re going to museums (especially the weird ones), hitting up the local library to ask for new recommendations, whether it’s a surprise or based on past tastes, we’re painting, collecting and collaging, sewing and embroidering our clothes, re-learning the harmonica, playing chess with strangers online and at the cafĆ©, we’re taking up tennis and pretending it’s not just because of challengers. the only way to find what brings you joy is to try.

I had to go to Greenwood Cemetery for a class last semester, and many famous people like Leonard Bernstein and Jean-Michel Basquiat are buried there, but I stumbled upon this woman’s grave that read ā€œFORTUNATE DESPERATE TRUSTFULā€ and I was so upset by the idea of someone putting desperate on my grave that I had to look her up. her name was Eleonora Duse, apparently she was often known as just Duse (so chic), she was an amazing Italian actress, muse, and, importantly, was involved in numerous lesbian love affairs. I think it’s in many ways much more respectful to learn about the people you pass by, rather than just letting them go on unacknowledged and unknown.
