I had to go to Greenwood Cemetery for a class last semester, and many famous people like Leonard Bernstein and Jean-Michel Basquiat are buried there, but I stumbled upon this woman’s grave that read “FORTUNATE DESPERATE TRUSTFUL” and I was so upset by the idea of someone putting desperate on my grave that I had to look her up. her name was Eleonora Duse, apparently she was often known as just Duse (so chic), she was an amazing Italian actress, muse, and, importantly, was involved in numerous lesbian love affairs. I think it’s in many ways much more respectful to learn about the people you pass by, rather than just letting them go on unacknowledged and unknown.

That reminds me of memorial benches in Regent’s Park. A bench dedicated to a woman (can’t remember her name) had a plaque inscribed with a quote by Wilde: “But strange that I was not told that the brain can hold, in a tiny ivory cell, God's heaven and hell” Made me wonder who she was and what she meant to the person who had that bench put

I want to do this at the cemetery by my college, Crown Hill. I’ve been there once before, but only for a quick tour

I do this with old letters I find at antique stores! I love learning about peoples' lives and not letting them be forgotten. I once found an old letter and I managed to find a whole recording of the recipient and her husband talking about their lives online, it was so cool

You’d think it would be somewhere prominent and fancy, but in reality, their gravesite is at a small cemetery off of a normal street and little church in Rockville, MD. The gravestone is carved with a quote from “The Great Gatsby”— So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past. And people leave daisies and booze when they visit.
I popped by their grave with a friend last fall, after attending an artist talk and grabbing soup dumplings for lunch. Paying your respects on a quiet afternoon can be simple and spontaneous. Makes me want to find more greats in Chicago to leave stones and mementos at.

I have family buried here from generations ago. My grandmother told me that before she got sick. I thought she was lying. One day I came across my uncommon name (with an even more uncommon spelling) on a sequence of graves, and it turns out that she was right. Even though our family has scattered in the generations since, this is one place I can return to feel close to my bloodline, to feel like I am in the right place.
It’s a beautiful cemetery & it’s nice to come home to where our experiment (unsuccessful as it sometimes feels) in being happy began.

this summer, we’re starting yoga, we’re learning a new language (being bilingual is now the standard, you need to know at least three to be truly chic), we’re going to concerts just because the tickets were cheap, we’re going to museums (especially the weird ones), hitting up the local library to ask for new recommendations, whether it’s a surprise or based on past tastes, we’re painting, collecting and collaging, sewing and embroidering our clothes, re-learning the harmonica, playing chess with strangers online and at the café, we’re taking up tennis and pretending it’s not just because of challengers. the only way to find what brings you joy is to try.
