God, do I love when companies promote from within. I'm in the process of moving up into a new department (logistics -> system engineer) and I'm so excited. I'm just beginning "training" and was already given a pretty substantial raise. i'm already pretty well versed in a lot of it, since i've worked here like 6 years and there's decent departmental overlap, so it should be a pretty smooth transition.
I've never understood why companies are so eager to look outside of their current pool of employees when a position opens up (I completely understand why they do this.) I much prefer when companies do this, rather than hiring someone who doesn't know anyone or anything about how things work when there's a current employee that could move up. it makes so much more send. plus, it looks really good on your resume!

The chair of the working group where I’m vice chair has served for three years and he’s stepping back for me to take his place 😳 as always I’m scared but excited! This is really going to help me develop my skills. And I’m applying for another position at my company that seems promising and would double my pay… my boss is going to reach out to the hiring manager and tell him that she couldn’t possibly recommend me more and she says that she knows I’ll excel in anything I do!! So hopefully things are looking up for me career-wise… keep lil ol’ me in your thoughts 🧿🫶

I don’t have any degree and in another life I worked in restaurants and at CVS. Customers would grill me about my career aspirations and straight up beg me to go to college. I got sick of it pretty quickly and sat down and asked myself what I would want in a workplace and what skills I had that I could use to do something else.
I had some freelance experience and used that to enter my current field and continued pursuing organic opportunities for growth and learning. About a year ago I started working at a company that prioritizes employee development and internal promotion and I’m in the process of gaining enough experience and connections to be able to do something new again! I definitely think it’s possible for people who don’t have a bachelor’s degree to find these opportunities; you just have to be strategic about it and get your foot in the door at the right places.
There are so many transferable skills you gain in retail and food service that are beneficial in other professional fields like communication, multi-tasking, attention to detail, etc. So you can take those and add them to whatever skills you may have gained at your current job.
Ask yourself what it is that you’re better at than anybody else, the things you would want and definitely not want in a workplace, the kind of tasks you like doing, and kind of guide your search from there. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you’re lesser than others just because you have less formalized education than they do and remember that people hire likable people they want to be around—even that will take you far! best of luck! 🍀

A senior-level colleague from a different department at work asked me this when we were collaborating on a project that's outside the scope of my regular job. I answered honestly that the work I do is not something I'm passionate about and I've done it out of necessity/because I lacked other opportunities, and that I would prefer to do something that's more intellectually stimulating and impactful.
Since that time he's been guiding me into opportunities to grow and develop lots of new skills and advocating for me along the way and it's been really nice! One of the best things to happen to me this year and it was really nice to have someone pick up on that and ask me.

a lot of places like pharmacies or libraries will provide it at no cost. it's a good thing to keep in your car or your bag, you never know when you might stumble across someone who needs it. if you're in the US, depending on your state, there's probably a directory you can find online of locations that provide it. i live in NY, and there's a publicly available list of all the participating pharmacies.
