halfway into being 19 and i could not recommend it more. it is raunchy, experimental, and isolating to be 19. its the birthing of what i’ve deemed The Second Puberty. it’s a time where the external stressors of adulthood are being thrown at a wall made of saturday morning cartoons and forming a kinship with ladybugs- and expecting it to ā€œact it’s ageā€. you dress and party and dabble in culture like an established 30-something-year-old, you wait for that guy to respond to your text like a 12 year old waiting for her crush to circle yes on her love note. you will laugh amongst a group of friends over a shared cig who either won’t be your friends in a few years or will grow to tell the tale, you will still ask your mom to go shopping with her so you can get a little treat and a coffee on the way back. 18 is not old enough and 20 is too scary. 19 is the perfect medium. i adore being 19 and i despise being 19. it’s on every end of the spectrum. i couldn’t recommend it more.

I’ve always seen 19 as being the most important age of my life thus far. and if I were to discern my life into two eras it would be pre 19 and after 19. i Moved across country Had a life threatening health scare, went to my first concert all in 365 days and it was by far the scariest most unpredictable time of my life and I fucking loved it man. The idea of the training wheels being dropped but not all the way is a frustratingly beautiful way to summerize it. I appriciate you sharing this and I hope the 2nd half of this year treats you well!

@FAYLOVETT ariana what are you doing here !!!! i love having your input, so much of the unknown lies within being 19. i’m on track to making the rest of this year count as well as every other to come, especially when your friendship is a big part of that :)

I loved being 19, it felt like the age I was supposed to be. I miss 19, I can’t wait to see what other years will feel like being 19 when I get older. Aging used to scare me a lot more, now I’ve realized the world is kinder to me as I’ve grown up, and I’ve grown kinder to myself too. I hope to smile enough that one day it’ll never leave my face again.

happy (early?) birthday!! šŸŽ‰ Idk what advice to give because i feel like the 20-somethings now are more emotionally aware than the 20-somethings from even as recent as a decade ago, but tune into your body, give yourself grace, and listen to others’ stories without feeling pressured to model your life after someone else’s. & if you don’t know what you want your life to look like yet that’s okay! ā¤ļø
At 21 I was in my senior year of college and engaged to be married within the year after graduation. In the southern religious environment we were in this wasn’t abnormal, but in retrospect that was soooo young to get married and I don’t think I would have so quickly if I hadn’t been so desperate to get out of a problematic family situation that involved some financial abuse. Despite changing A LOT over the past decade+ my partner and I are still together, and I look back at 21 as a time when I most followed the social script expected of me and coasted on that for a while, until it all started to fall apart (in an ultimately good if devastating way) when I became a mom at 24.Ā
tl;dr: my 21 was tame and mellow and happy but i had no idea who i was or what i could be and now i do have a stronger sense of that at 32 and that feels better

big bubbly graffiti, a city that operates hand-in-hand with the environment so that the skies are never full of smog, rooted in punk and adapted to the neon colors of a brighter future; all of these things are encapsulated by one of my favorite musicians, closest friends, and now — a booming indie artist that i have the pleasure of managing. *faylovett is a jack of all trades, from funky edits to songs that will never leave your brain as much as you wish they would, he embraces and adds onto an aesthetic that is heavily oversaturated and subsequently dimmed in the current era. take the likes of KKB, 2Hollis, even Snail House and you’ve already got an idea of how *faylovett’s sound makes you feel. it’s nostalgic, but not suffocatingly so. it’s like looking at a photograph of you and your partner when you first started dating, part of you misses that fun and colorful youth, yet you find yourself missing — even more — what is yet to come. *faylovett’s latest single ā€œ*ssn_or_dieā€ is a track that had me reeling since we first started chatting about its creation: it’s a coming of age story told sonically through whimsical video game-y noise and lyrically from the perspective of a hectic, ridden 22 year old mind. the sound of hope for a future and anxiety collide to provide you with the most impactful track ive heard yet out of *faylovett’s discography. alongside his music, *faylovett’s chronic online-ness and understanding of his personal brand at such a blossoming stage in his career only add to his likeability. it is likely you’ll find a pop culture reference or two scattered about his music, and his youtube/short form content is riddled with it as well. trust me, ā€œget off that f*ckin phoneā€ is a line i’ve had a giggle about way too many times.
and that’s just the magic of *faylovett. he’s the pinnacle of everything right with the internet, and moreover, with the freedom of allowing anyone to create content shared to a widespread audience. give ā€œ*ssn_or_dieā€ a listen and tell me how you feel !
