i will never settle down somewhere that is not next to an ocean i will never be land locked for a long period of time i will always be most comfortable within an hour driving range of the ocean one time on a road trip to nevada as a kid i overheard the gas station lady saying she had only seen the ocean 3 times and it was the saddest thing i had ever heard i thought about it for the rest of the trip some people will never see the ocean and some people only a few times the ocean and shore and the smell and the experience are the most stable thing i can call home and will always give me That Feeling

I love the beach, it's a part of me. What's crazy is I've only been once but I can still the sand on my skin and taste the salt in the oceanšŸ’™

I moved to LA from NY a few years ago, and I gotta say if you aren’t going to the beach you're an idiot!Ā  Most of us are an hour drive from some of the most beautiful beaches in the world! I hit all the beaches - and will even drive out to Laguna - IDGAF. I love going into the ocean, it makes me feel alive. When the water's calm I like to float and let my mind wander. I’ve come up with some of my best ideas out there. I also have been tumbled by some really strong waves - scary stuff - gotta respect the tide. The sun and the ocean really help me feel alive.Ā  If I’m bummed and I go to the beach, the next day I always feel better. It’s magic - we are a species that needs sun!Ā  Buy an umbrella if you don’t like the sun and just stare at the ocean. It’s beautiful. I’ve seen dolphins and whales many times in California. Bring a cooler and throw out your trash. Sorry to be such an environmentalist.Ā Ā

There’s a beach at South West Rocks in northern NSW called Trial Bay. It is the only place in my childhood that I remember being really, genuinely happy. I haven’t been there in probably close to twenty years now but I can still taste the salt water when I would accidentally swallow it if I went into the proper surf, and the sweetness of this green apple syrup I would get on my snow cones that a random fella would sell there every summer. The sunburns I would get were insane because I would just spend all day snorkelling in the shallows. There wasn’t anything that interesting to look at but I was captivated by the idea that there was like a whole other little world under the surface of the water. Whenever I think about what being at peace would feel like for me I think about those days at that beach.

Yamo is one of my most sacred gems of the mission district. Cash-Only, hole in the wall, fast paced service for the best, cheap, burmese noodles in the city. What makes it good is the heart and integrity the wonderful front woman Michelle puts into the place. She remembers her regulars, and is about her business. Running a tight ship with Mama, Michelle carries the restaurant with heart and pride. Recently the famous house noodle went from $8 to $9, but that’s just a sign of the times. My go-to is the $5 potstickers, I can’t find any other place that makes them as yummy as these wonderful ladies. I found this place as it’s pretty integrated into the local skate culture, which The Chronical details in an awesome piece which you can read here: https://www.sfchronicle.com/food/restaurants/article/yamo-noodles-burmese-menu-18168451.php In all honesty, the popularity and tight-knit nature of the place does come with a mild wait most times, but it is so worth it after a long day at Dolo / paroozing Valencia. Pro Tip: When arriving to the door, just ask the nearest person if they are waiting to dine in, or getting take-out; then act accordingly. There’s only about 8 seats inside so takeout is usually my go to✨
