I like asking this at parties and on first dates and other introductory meetings. It's a pretty disarming question and usually elicits an honest answer. It's a gateway to much deeper convo about growing up and who the speaker is now. It has made a few people really uncomfortable though. I don't like to pry if they're off-put by the question. I usually follow-up with, yea I don't like mine either haha... (I like my flawed parents).

There's this line in Quiet Town from The Killers that makes me think of my parents whenever I hear it: "Every time I see my parents, in the prime of their life, offering their son the kind of love he could never put down..." -- Around age 20 I had a revelation: my parents are only human. I can't hold them to some godlike standard or expect perfection from them. Sure, they made tremendous mistakes in raising me. They were broken people themselves, reeling from the mistakes of their even more broken parents. But they did the best they could. They've come through for me so many times. And I've been able to come through for them. I'm coming to see that what is truly precious is the privilege of being able journey with people. Journey with them in their grief, anger, joy, mess ups, and silliness. Sometimes they get it right. Sometimes they get it wrong. Sometimes I definitely get it wrong! But we've stayed in it and it is has never been more beautiful. But that's just me and my particular parents. Different for everyone. - It took some work for me to get here. And I'd like to say "you're welcome" to those several therapists who are enjoying their beach houses because of me.

I wrote a few paragraphs, realized I’m not in the mood to trauma dump, deleted it. My answer is no I don’t like them, but they disliked me first.

My parents were not perfect, no one is. But they were both truly best friends to me and taught me how to live Wisely and think Openly. I hold so much love and respect, honor and reverence for them both. Rest In Power, mom and dad. I commit the rest of my life to now saving our Holy Mother Earth for Our New Reality because life in this old reality is not worth living.

@RATTLESNAKE “I am them, they are me.” So true and beautiful… we‘re always connected to our parents - intrinsically intertwined throughout space and time.

This is, I think, the best question I’ve been asked on a date— it lets me answer as superficially or as deeply as I’m comfortable, and it feels better/more sincere than a compliment. Early into a date compliments always feel really superficial, and this is a way to actually ask what someone likes about themselves, instead of telling them what you like about them.

Really great question because 1) it is very useful for you, you can get a lot of information about a place by how someone talks about where they work 2) it turns the interview into more of a conversation which is what you want 3) it always goes over well because people LOVEEE to talk about themselves, arguably the most important point. your interview is probably nervous too or tired of doing interviews. They love to be out of the hot seat

I love to ask what people are currently “in to” - meaning current inspirations, fixations, interests, etc. 1. It’s subtle but revealing- I now know what you are interested in and get a hint at how you view life (ex. some interests can be perceived as narcissistic/surface level vs. thoughtful/curious) *Granted, not eveyone will have a good answer (or may not even be able to answer) and that will tell you all you need to know!! 2. Naturally we love to talk about ourselves and our passions so it will certainly keep the conversation going. Extra points for asking questions about what they say (maybe you’re interested, maybe you’re not- but at least it’s not awkward anymore)

This is the best Winter salad. One of the best salads ever. (period) Fennel, radicchio and oranges. Add in some grapefruit and toasted almonds for an extra *pop* of flavor and color. A little olive oil, some white wine vinegar or balsamic. All u need.
