Work literally destroys the soul. Everyone is exhausted all the time because performing labor and maintaining the human spirit are incompatible with each other. We live under a system that wants everyone beaten down and isolated and having little energy to make plans with those you love is a symptom of a larger, evil system

i think this is what truly bugs me. i don’t blame my friends at all for being busy and exhausted, but i also get the sense that it wasn’t always like this- you watch seinfeld or friends and it seems like casual hangs were the norm. you ‘popped in’ or grabbed lunch cause that was just how you connect. it just sucks that somehow 1-2 hours on a weeknight is too much to ask for in the current state of things

@MILKBAGS Nobody is free weeknights because their spirit has been siphoned for profit. Nobody is free on the weekend because they need to be rested enough to be “”””productive”””” again on monday, and so on. Sad!

Agreed. So many systems and infrastructure are designed to separate us, not unite us. That’s why when Zuck says that AI can fill in the gaps in our friend group to combat loneliness, it should scare us. That is deeply sinister and should not be normalized. We need real community.

@ZENLIKEME it sounds dumb but when that NYT article on the cure for male loneliness being Pickleball clubs it was actually so true! disappearing into cyberspace is going to alienate us further from community, or at the very least isolate us in disparate and atomized online community to the detriment of real world connection

@ZENLIKEME Totally agree. And while I love some online spaces and people can forge meaningful relationships from them, it’s not the same as people in our area. I have so many great friends and family around the country, but when my partner got really sick, they couldn’t do a lot for me. Send money or gift cards, yes, but not be here to physically help. It’s one example but it shows how we need people in our immediate community who we can help and be helped by throughout our lives. Online friends are not enough.

menial and exploitative labor is bad, but i believe that meaningful labor is actually one of life’s greatest pleasures and a human need. purpose, passion, and provision over productivity!

@ROYALLMONARCH I agree but like most of us are stuck doing menial exploitable labor with absolutely no protections and no ability to unionize lol. Getting to do actual meaningful work (with a stable income) is a huge privilege

Chatgpt proves that people crave ease and mediocrity instead of joyous satisfaction. Capitalism has made their lives so artificially stressful that the idea of effort for cognitive tasks is ridiculous to them.

It’s easy to condemn the world of QR code menus, HR talk, and big-box stores as bleak. It’s a reflex to be revolted by the sterile dust that now seemingly coats every corner of the Western World. Blue pill or Red Pill, I guess. When the only alternative seems to be outright populism. There seems to be a lethargic and sneering shadow that nips the heels of every passer-by. Isn’t easy to be ironic. Isn’t it easy to hold an air of apathetic sardonicism. Isn’t it easy to curse the cage we are locked in, only to tighten the bars in fear of what lies beyond. If Emily Dickson claims that “hope” is the thing with feathers, I wonder what she will make of the bird who clipped its own wings. Be brave, I think. Take courage to revolt against the programmed norm to hate and to despise. See beauty in the perfect cubes of Chocolate Milk cartons, find humour in the abrupt slopes of beer bellies. You haven’t even lost your skin elasticity yet, maybe you should just go fly a kite.

Freshman year I went through an industrial phase so I was really into stuff like Rammstein, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, Revolting Cocks, etc. Sophomore year is kind of a blur but I remember listening to a lot of LCD Soundsystem and Kraftwerk. Junior year I got REALLY into shit like Bikini Kill, Hole, Sleater-Kinney, etc. Also went through a good month or two where I was only listening to ska. I have no recollection of anything I did during senior year so idk what I listening to lol
