Yes there are actual things to do and see but you can also just walk until you can’t feel anything. I visit quite often and walking itself has become the highlight of my trips there. You get to watch the city transform in a way that you miss out on with the subway. I’ve yet to try biking as I don’t have much experience on the road but if you’re confident I’d imagine citi bikes being a fun way to travel too. If you want an actual location try to go to the Met and Central Park, can easily waste a day just wandering around near there.

In virtually any weather at any speed walking from downtown to midtown is one of my favorite activities. If you are bored it’s just a really nice activity to do by yourself or with a friend. It's really meditative, you see neighborhoods change and can look at all these different things on the way. There are some fun places to stop on the way, like Kaluystayans and Dover Street Market or the Morgan Library. Once I arrive in midtown I like going to the Paris Theater, The Grill, or Ice skating in central park. MoMA can be fun too.

It is essential to remind yourself that Manhattan is a big city, with much more to offer than just the charades of downtown. Take the subway to the Upper West Side and walk through the park on 81st street. Go to the Met (you can skip the entire ticket line by entering through the student entrance to the left of the main stairs). Have dinner at my favorite restaurant “Celeste” on 84th and Amsterdam, or have lunch at “ Via Quadronno”  on 73rd between Madison and 5th. When you head back downtown or to Brooklyn at the end of the evening, you’ll feel like you traveled far and went on vacation. Feeling like a tourist in your own city is a gift and a thrill!

My god everything is experienced better this way. Stop looking at guides, walkthroughs, endings explained (my least favorite), even the blurbs on the back. Such a rare opportunity in this time to go into something without knowing anything about it, yet so rewarding. To be pleasantly surprised or blown away, to have no idea what’s happening, to find that you really didn’t like it, an opinion formed on your own.. nothing is more valuable
