There is a gasp-inducing shot at least once every minute for the entire runtime. Crazy that this was made almost entirely in a studio, you'd never know it.
Or anything Powell and Pressburger really
Black Narcissus is a once-banned British psychological drama revolving around the growing tensions amongst a group of angelical nuns whoโve been relocated to the Himalayan mountains. Banned due to itsย sexual inferences and potentially offensive portrayal of religious figures. I love movies with monastic themes and the coloring in this film is otherworldly.
Highly recommend The Red Shoes and A Matter of Life and Death as well!
Olivier Assayas, 1996.
It's so hard to explain why I love it, but every second of this movie just works. Very unconventionally put together. Very unusual plot structure and it's quite meta. And Maggie Cheung :)
