Here it is, folks! Volume I of what could very well be a continuous project. Thank you so much to everyone that submitted - I smiled the entire time I was putting this together. It's best listened to with headphones ☺️ Liner Notes: This collection of field recordings is a collaborative effort with users of PI.FYI, each of which recorded their own pieces. It features audio from all over the world and exhibits eclectic moments from London Underground commutes to cuckoo bird calls in Dhaka to the sounds of a century-old American diner. Online communities like PI.FYI often represent a diverse set of people, places, and experiences, but together, the submissions form a living collage that highlights the commonalities of modern life - a unifying message for such a tumultuous time. The first track features all of the sounds played at once in an attempt to create an audio snapshot of an online community but in their offline lives. The individual recordings are unedited except for minor gain and compression adjustments for consistency across the collection.

there was this new york times story on a couple buying a fire island house and discovering 200 tapes of dj sets between 1979 and 1999, and a sound engineer has been digitizing them and more are still uploading. it’s a lovely time portal and does more to set a mood for me than any ambient pop usually can, plus it tickles my crown chakra or whatever to feel some sort of connection to generations past.

I play on it too now and more coming soon :))) if you’re in LA (or anywhere) keep an eye out on our insta— we’re playing more and more shows and some shows in NY and hopefully Manchester on the map too!! “Introducing a revisionist exotica for these times…aquatic synths & drum machines, slide guitars & santoors, stray trumpets and accordion...ethno-industrial, dub, and samples from a fifty-year old suitcase of cassettes... The major catalyst was a suitcase of twenty cassettes my father unearthed from his teenage years in Iran, recorded between 1972-1975, taping DJ monologues off the radio, lines of movie dialogue off the TV, radio plays, spoken word translations of European pop... That made it a kind of excavation of a bygone time, a travelogue to a place accessed only through cultural artifact & collective memory. An imaginary soundtrack to a half-remembered movie from a faraway place.”
