I saw my first film directed by Kore-eda yesterday and it was a masterpiece! I absolutely loved this film. This is also the first film I have seen that has Ryuichi Sakamoto as the composer! I really love the emotion and character shown in this film. The actors and actresses did a great job acting. It definitely struck a chord with me and I felt like I could definitely relate to what was shown in the film. I heavily recommend this film and will be excited to check out more films made by this director.

🌀I’m including this because it’s a vaguely unapproachable art film and I hope you’re impressed that I liked it. I saw it at Metrograph in January. Dreams consists of eight vignettes, each inspired by real recurring dreams from Kurosawa’s life. It was made late in his career and is described by Metrograph as “the work of a filmmaker with nothing left to prove but a great deal to say.” (I’ve been thinking about that phrasing ever since I read it.) I hate to sound like a frat boy but I was on mushrooms when I saw it and I am going to have to recommend that. I’ve never seen the uncanny nature of dreams captured so well.

Quickly becoming a huge Kiyoshi Kurosawa fan.
I loved Cure (top 5 for me) and Pulse was really great too. His films really get under your skin and create a distinct feeling of dread.

Great movie by Ryusuke Hamaguchi (director of Drive My Car). Lean, subtle, and effective. It's like a precursor to Joachim Trier's The Worst Person in the World, but very Japanese. Poses a provocative question about why we choose to love the people we love, and brings the protagonist up to make a breathtaking and appalling decision.

Such an important documentary film, and I’m glad that my local Lyric Theater showed this film. It was devastating but I hope more people watch this film. Thank you to the people who worked on this film. I’m so glad this film won an Oscar! The work done in this film is great and I would love to applaud every single one of these people that made this movie.

I have been eating this sandwich for a long time and it tastes so good to me. I heard some people have this grilled but I don’t grill them. Make sure you grab some water while you eat because it can be hard to chew down.
