currently working through the artistā€™s way, and morning pages have quickly become a fav. Itā€™s a steam-of-thought/get everything on the page daily habit. I find itā€™s great to just get the momentum going if I want to work but Iā€™m stuck on what to do (you can even think through this conflict on the page and brainstorm solutions or figure out why you donā€™t feel like it). I like to also look through stuff I wrote previously if I had any good ideas I didnā€™t know what to do with at the time.

I was going to recommend The Artistā€™s Way, but someone already has. So I thought Iā€™d come and say that she has another course-book called ā€œThe Right to Writeā€. I havenā€™t started it yet, but I have it and itā€™s similar to The Artistā€™s Way but focussed specifically on writing. I really loved The Artistā€™s Way, and there are things I started when I was doing it that have become parts of my life in general. Morning pages are something Iā€™ve done for years but had fallen out of doing everyday, so it put me back on track and I find it useful. Although I do sometimes think that i prefer evening pages to morning. Morning pages your brain is blank so itā€™s easier to create new things, but if you struggle with creating new things atm then evening pages often gives you more to work with. You have everything you did that day, stuff to reflect on, feelings to process. So if morning pages are feeling tough, perhaps try before bed! You might end up doing both night and morning!

The former stolen from 'The Artist's Way' (three pages of stream-of-consciousness journaling every morning), the latter inspired by someone I follow on IG who once posted "the morning walk changed my life" (she was right). As a practice, morning pages are basically taking out the garbage for your brain, while to douche-ily drop a Nietzsche quote I've come across a bunch recently, ā€œAll truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.ā€ Plus a bunch of mediocre ones! But really, can't say enough about both for creativity... and sanity <3

Before you guys ask, yes Iā€™ve been doing the morning pages from ā€œThe Artistā€™s Wayā€ LOL Real talk though, the structure of the book has been super helpful in structuring my own creative process, and one of the best possible things itā€™s done for me so far is to learn how to write and create, even when youā€™re ā€œnot in the moodā€ or youā€™re mentally blocked. On the days I canā€™t think of shit, I just start rambling about gossip and chairs and people watching (or whatever misc thing is on your mind) and all of a sudden a new project idea hit me out of some random association in my brain from years ago that I never touched til now Anyway yeah, GO WRITE AND CREATE EVEN IF YOU DONT FEEL LIKE IT bc youā€™ll be surprised at what finds you!!!

Iā€™m too dear with lovely things. I keep the brooch my 2nd grade teacher gave me in a box, safe, and because of this Iā€™ve never worn something I really like! I recently decided I needed to wear my brooch with the sweater I finished knitting this weekend. It made it feel even more special. :)

I was talking to a friend whoā€™s visiting home after being abroad and we both agree that not seeing familiar trees fills you with a certain longing/loneliness. I love western red cedars!
