(Madonna in a Fur Coat by Sabahattin Ali) I read this book at my social sciences high school in Turkey and to this day it is my favorite book. I’ve never teared up at the end of a book before or after this one actually. I need to reread it - it was so touching ugh.

I got to read this book before the Alchemist. So when I did get to the Alchemist, I noticed how both of them were similarly bathed in poetry. This book is one of those rare ones that shifted me every time I opened it up. It has moved me in ways I can’t describe and always leaves a beautiful residue, even if I haven’t re-read it recently.

Growing up as a very privileged rich kid my Turkish private school made us read this book at the age of 10 and it changed me, no exaggeration or bs. This book is written from the perspective of Zeze (the writer) a very poor kid living in Rio de Janeiro and he explores themes of loss, family dynamics, friendship, love, innocence, and imagination. I learn, feel, and cry more every time I read this book. It has made me into who I am and I owe the fact that I am no longer a spoiled brat who has no understanding of life to this book. It is so beautiful that I miss reading it or thinking about it when I am not, it is very nostalgic and sentimental to me🍊

This book reminded me what it's like to feel so close to characters and their lives that you want to spend every single second with them, and how it feels to miss them when the book ends. If you're at all like me and you love dissecting the subtle (often mundane or unglamorous) intricacies of daily human life, this book will blow you away. Savas writes in a way that made me feel seen and alive. I've been reading her other works and she's just a star.

I fantasize about moving somewhere different every 3 months and it’s her turn now. There’s a 17 million dollar home on some cliff out in Maine and I dream of living there specifically :)

So absurd, so funny, ended definitely not where it started. This cold NYC weather is asking you no begging you to get cozy and watch this movie!
