it's free and 100% human, I recommend NTS Radio, which is web-based and has a huge archive of recorded shows in many genres and topics. Bandcamp and Soundcloud also have playlists that feel more carefully curated than Spotify's I think. oh and college radios are a great place for discovering new music too. There's a site called campus-fm.com that let's you tune into different ones across the US :) disclaimer: i work for a radio station

local/college radio is the absolute best way to find new music, especially when they are non-commercial and have a lot of freedom with what they play. sometimes you need to look past some bad picks but that’s part of the fun. also!! when u get into a habit of tuning in routinely you hear the same DJs frequently and get to know them and it’s so cute. AND local radio stations often run events and you can get involved and meet your favourite DJs and all of a sudden it’s not just discovering new music it’s a community!!! long live college radio!!

there’s not much that’ll make you feel like a person existing with your own thoughts and feelings until you start tuning into community radio stations, where the biggest sponsor is the local animal shelter. they’re doing some of the most fun stuff over there, because radio is whatever they want it to be! and it’s such a fun way to get cool music recommendations. On college radio stations especially, there are often communist programs and book clubs, which we love. But check out your local radio’s website and see what’s up n coming. Just, great stuff all around. Something about scheduled programs or DJ sets that you look forward to listening heals the body I think. Slower gratification, something or another. And you don’t need to be in the car to tune in, there are tons of radio apps available to supplement your spotify time.

It’s 7am and I’m listening to what I could only describe as Haunted Dolphin Operatics… Spotify daylist could never. But fr if you’re looking to discover new music this is a great way to do it! You don’t need a car or radio bc you can listen online. Wellness check on whichever college sophomore was playing Greg Mendez’s self-titled album in its entirety on WKKC 89.3 the other day… Bonus: Radio Garden is a fun way to see what’s playing around the world.

I think reducing or eliminating our use of these huge megacorp platforms is ultimately the best way to fight back. I don’t think we can fix a platform in which the addictiveness and brain rot element is foundational to its success. Even the ā€œgoodā€ stuff is designed to keep us in its endless loop.
