there’s not much that’ll make you feel like a person existing with your own thoughts and feelings until you start tuning into community radio stations, where the biggest sponsor is the local animal shelter. they’re doing some of the most fun stuff over there, because radio is whatever they want it to be! and it’s such a fun way to get cool music recommendations. On college radio stations especially, there are often communist programs and book clubs, which we love. But check out your local radio’s website and see what’s up n coming. Just, great stuff all around. Something about scheduled programs or DJ sets that you look forward to listening heals the body I think. Slower gratification, something or another. And you don’t need to be in the car to tune in, there are tons of radio apps available to supplement your spotify time.

local/college radio is the absolute best way to find new music, especially when they are non-commercial and have a lot of freedom with what they play. sometimes you need to look past some bad picks but that’s part of the fun. also!! when u get into a habit of tuning in routinely you hear the same DJs frequently and get to know them and it’s so cute. AND local radio stations often run events and you can get involved and meet your favourite DJs and all of a sudden it’s not just discovering new music it’s a community!!! long live college radio!!

used to have so much more influence on the music industry than it does now. kind of sad that it's no longer so democratised, and what's popular is usually dictated by big boring execs and algorithms. if you don't want to harass your friends anymore for music recs, and maybe even get out of the bubble of your peer group - find your local college station and tune in. it's always young people passionate about a popular niche. it's always interesting to have to listen to something live, and to sit through songs you might not like, unable to skip them. if anyone has any good recommendations for their local/college radio stations I'd be so so down to listen! i've got a show every thursday 6pm BST i'm gonna link when it's live to put you bitches on

Ditch Spotify’s corporate agenda and chuck on a little FM radio. It’s an awesome way to discover new music and break out of your bubble. Support the community stations that play local artists and go to their gigs. Some of the most talented musicians are right in your own backyard. Video didn’t kill the radio star because radio will never die! <3

You can access the archive from Plex and it’s a hUge range of films, all for free! It’s been a lifesaver since leaving college and losing access to Kanopy. Tons of revolutionary films and documentaries, it’s like netflix for cool people! Jk i kid, i kid… 👀. A lot of independent films that are no longer being shown are up there too!! Great stuff all around.

besides free books (physical, digital, audio) the amount of stuff u have access to is wild. i’m talking board games, sewing machines, language classes, coding lessons, cds and dvds (that you can rip and copy and kEEP - none of the librarians are gonna tell you shit for that), maker spaces, 3D printers, community events, ballet classes, movie nights, car repair lessons, resume help, free national park tickets, bat tours during october! It’s great! And for free?!?? in thIS economy? Literally why pay for a coworking space when the library is Right there, with free wifi and quiet rooms all to yourself. And if there are things you don’t see offered but want to? Ask! Or even better, offer!! Start your own thing, get to know your community members. Utilize your third spaces, they’re great!!
