While winter doesn’t normally strip me of my ability to ride my bike, my winter commuter is currently out of commission with a stuck seatpost, so I’ve had to winterize one of my other commuters to serve this purpose - since it’s a nice day out, I just spent the morning giving this a good tune up. It’s a very zen process for me, and I love the fine tuning and little modifications to get everything running all together! It’s not perfect, I built this whole thing out of stuff from my co-ops parts bin last year, but it’ll get me where I need to go!

lately with the colder weather and busier work days, i haven’t been commuting by bike much. but my car is acting up and i’ve decided to park her until i have a day to work on her. and i’m commuting by bike again. I’m more tired physically, my body is aching all over, my ass hurts and im frustrated by trying to pack everything i need in my commuter bag. but the in between moments on my bike: wind in my hair, legs screaming, sprinting around the beautiful paths in my city. but the long moments of meditation in movement while my heart is goin bum bump while the sun shines on cold grass. but the feeling of freedom while i ride with my hands in my pockets, my favourite music accompanying the river i ride along. but seeing every dog on their walk. but my unbreakable spirit on a bike!! thank god my car is fucked.

Bikes are fun! I loved ripping around them as a kid, but the moment I got a flat my dad threw his hands up and the bike was forever hung up. Flash forward to adult life and living in a city where owning a car isn't necessary, I commute everywhere by bike. A decent toolkit and youtube are enough to do most things and learning how to do simple repairs and adjustments on my bike has been empowering and satisfying. Working on bikes is a fun mechanical and delicate challenge! Fun fact: a bike rolling down hill will stay upright longer than a standing bike.

[1] An elaborate mural is currently being painted on a long wall along my cycling route. I love riding past each day and checking in on what the artist is up to. The graffiti painted over, a new beginning. Sea animals being sketched out will soon be fully formed so I can imagine them swimming with me as I ride. [2] A new/modernised mixed-use area is being developed along my route. I have been cycling past for at least the last 7 years and gradually watching empty lots turn into cafes, restaurants, housing, bike shops and kindergartens. I love looking up at apartment balconies and windows and seeing how people make them their own and colour their surroundings. [3] I love watching the seasons change along my route. The way flowers bloom in big wild hedges as I cross the route’s first bridge in Spring, the way vines have twisted along covered the grey cement of the underpass I ride through. I love riding through dry leaves in Autumn and rain in Winter. I love looking down and watching the shadow of my bike appear and then disappear into the shade of the surrounding trees under hot Summer sun. I love riding with a clear view of the stars at night. My recommendation here is to look up, to appreciate change in your surroundings and in yourself. To see whimsy and poetry in the everyday.

A website with a collection of screengrabs from nearly every movie you could think of, and you can sort by film title, director, cinematographer, year, genre, country, etc. Great for visual references for lookbooks, or just to discover a new film you might be interested in seeing! I've attached one of my favorite stills, a great moment from Chungking Express (Dir. Wong Kar-Wai, 1994).

Just going out and picking up any kind of used physical media (books, CDs, DVDs, cassette tapes) makes the archivist in me happy, like I’m preserving somebody else’s story/ enjoyment of something My personal favorite thing is VHS tapes, I’ve got a decent collection (all thrifted) and they’re usually the cheapest things offered
