Just going out and picking up any kind of used physical media (books, CDs, DVDs, cassette tapes) makes the archivist in me happy, like I’m preserving somebody else’s story/ enjoyment of something
My personal favorite thing is VHS tapes, I’ve got a decent collection (all thrifted) and they’re usually the cheapest things offered

yagababa Totally agree! I’ve got a milk crate full of DVDs too, anything you can buy and watch whenever you want is a victory imo!

nice collection!! i'm super big into archiving and collecting physical media too (especially CDs and cassettes) and i love seeing other people's finds. it feels like we're all creating mini reference libraries and preserving media that would likely get lost to the internet <3

verygoodvalentina 100% agree, with music especially! Obscure/ bootleg Cassettes and records and CDs are so fun to find and save and share with friends! We need to bring back the art of the physical mixtape!

YES! Wow that is an incredible collection!! I love a good VHS hunt, especially because it opens you up to so many more oddities. My favourite is Mars Needs Women (1968)

misoparker that’s an incredible find! Of my collection, my favorite is Dead Alive/ Braindead (Dir. Peter Jackson, 1993), which I got along with the first three Alien movies and Scream (also all on VHS!)

I started seriously collecting (if you can call it serious) physical media about a year ago, about the same time I got into film photography. I love going through the VHS, DVDs, and cassettes at thrift stores. I don’t have tons of vinyl bc they’re expensive but I like those too, and I have tons of books of course. :)

after playstation removed a bunch of videos that people had already purchased through their store i learnt that when you buy digital products, you're not really buying them, you're buying a licence to use them until they decide they want to stop licensing it out to you. so i've kind of got back into collecting physical media
i saw in my local charity shop that CDs were 10p and i had a look and holy shiiiiiit i found some gold, Outkast, Lauryn Hill, Arrested Development, Bon Iver, Haim, loads of stuff - and i don't live in a particularly 'cool' place so was surprised to find them and i've already rec'ed this before but DVDs too, a place by me does 10 for 50p and even found fairly recent titles like the favourite, little women, etc.
idk, i guess i might be romanticising having physical media but i love it

I’m not off streaming, but these are some things I do to feel the fun in movies/music again and diverge. I’ve always kinda been a CD supremacist and saved/kept buying them, it’s never too late to start, for any medium!
- investing in some equipment like DVD, CD, cassette, etc players if you don’t have the old ones to dig out, or they’re too messed up. A decent DVD player is super inexpensive these days, avoid internet nostalgia up-sellers
- going to any random thrift store, including the “bad ones”, and really going through their book/CD/DVD inventory THOROUGHLY. Pick up what looks interesting, it’s likely something you already have in your digital library will be there for cheap and to own forever.
- patronizing remaining movie stores, they can be few and far between but the people who run them are usually very passionate about film. If you have one within a reasonable distance from you, it feels great to take a DVD back they recommended you or a familiar classic. Going to the movie store can be so fun and is something we’ve been deprived of since DVD’s decline. Same for music shops
- exploring obsolete mediums, if you end up getting a VCR you can find tapes for super duper cheap and watch a lot of movies and expand your library fast!
- movie or music or medium specific swaps if they’re in ur area, or trade with fellow enthusiasts anywhere you can find them, even online movie clubs

A website with a collection of screengrabs from nearly every movie you could think of, and you can sort by film title, director, cinematographer, year, genre, country, etc. Great for visual references for lookbooks, or just to discover a new film you might be interested in seeing!
I've attached one of my favorite stills, a great moment from Chungking Express (Dir. Wong Kar-Wai, 1994).

An artist who stood by his philosophies first and foremost, and whose work somehow remains one of the strongest case studies we have about how creativity can be a tool against fascisim. Life changing to see in person, phone screens do not do them justice
