Just going out and picking up any kind of used physical media (books, CDs, DVDs, cassette tapes) makes the archivist in me happy, like I’m preserving somebody else’s story/ enjoyment of something My personal favorite thing is VHS tapes, I’ve got a decent collection (all thrifted) and they’re usually the cheapest things offered

yagababa Totally agree! I’ve got a milk crate full of DVDs too, anything you can buy and watch whenever you want is a victory imo!

nice collection!! i'm super big into archiving and collecting physical media too (especially CDs and cassettes) and i love seeing other people's finds. it feels like we're all creating mini reference libraries and preserving media that would likely get lost to the internet <3

verygoodvalentina 100% agree, with music especially! Obscure/ bootleg Cassettes and records and CDs are so fun to find and save and share with friends! We need to bring back the art of the physical mixtape!

YES! Wow that is an incredible collection!! I love a good VHS hunt, especially because it opens you up to so many more oddities. My favourite is Mars Needs Women (1968)

misoparker that’s an incredible find! Of my collection, my favorite is Dead Alive/ Braindead (Dir. Peter Jackson, 1993), which I got along with the first three Alien movies and Scream (also all on VHS!)

I started seriously collecting (if you can call it serious) physical media about a year ago, about the same time I got into film photography. I love going through the VHS, DVDs, and cassettes at thrift stores. I don’t have tons of vinyl bc they’re expensive but I like those too, and I have tons of books of course. :)

after playstation removed a bunch of videos that people had already purchased through their store i learnt that when you buy digital products, you're not really buying them, you're buying a licence to use them until they decide they want to stop licensing it out to you. so i've kind of got back into collecting physical media i saw in my local charity shop that CDs were 10p and i had a look and holy shiiiiiit i found some gold, Outkast, Lauryn Hill, Arrested Development, Bon Iver, Haim, loads of stuff - and i don't live in a particularly 'cool' place so was surprised to find them and i've already rec'ed this before but DVDs too, a place by me does 10 for 50p and even found fairly recent titles like the favourite, little women, etc. idk, i guess i might be romanticising having physical media but i love it

While cleaning up the shed, my parents and I found some old cd's and a cd rack. We kind of have this idea that whataver is put on the internet will stay there and although, yes things can come back from the deepest or most abandont parts, just like all other things it somewhat decays. So as of now, I got some cd's again (mostly secondhand). I'm not the type who then starts collecting and consuming for no reason. I'll probably get just enough for the rack to be filled. So my rec would be to think of your favourite genres or specific albums (or with any other media) and then get only those in physical media. Now whatever happens, you'll have it, while also not overspending or consuming <3

A website with a collection of screengrabs from nearly every movie you could think of, and you can sort by film title, director, cinematographer, year, genre, country, etc. Great for visual references for lookbooks, or just to discover a new film you might be interested in seeing! I've attached one of my favorite stills, a great moment from Chungking Express (Dir. Wong Kar-Wai, 1994).

Yeah, a lot of them are silly, but I like to keep them anyways - I tape them to the outside or on the inside of my notebooks as a little pick-me-up. I used this notebook in undergrad for my arts and culture journalism class. I still procrastinated, but it was funny to have that reminder.
