A new album by an old fav was released today. It’s dreamy as ever, but the music of Youth Lagoon 2.0 feels super specific. When he returned with the last one, I knew I was hearing the work of an artist caught in a fresh creative current, and I’m not surprised to see this phase continue.

Trevor Powers has always been a distinctly detailed songwriter, able to create worlds within his songs that push well beyond their runtime. On Rarely Do I Dream, Powers harnesses this to craft a sprawling, mystical account of his own life - part album, part audio memoir.
Sonically, this is suitable dreamy and nostalgic, weaving his own home video audio throughout and thoughtfully layering his compositions within the static. It's like if the end of Scott Street was an album. There's a tactility to the sound that realises the stories being told whether they are suburban and personal, or mythical and folkloric.
What a voice, what an album. Glad Powers is back.

In 2016, the guy from Youth Lagoon said that Youth Lagoon was over, and in 2018 he released this thing under his own name, and in 2022 he said he was Youth Lagoon again and continued putting out Youth Lagoon music. I don’t feel like I really know what this is, but I’ve returned to it more than any album that has been released in the last 10 years. I think it might sound like touching the heart of the world if it had a real, human heart. There is a noise 90 seconds in to the second song that embodies grief so clearly that when it resolves into a descending minor tone exactly two minutes later it feels like being in a collapsing house. I don’t know if I’d call it perfect but it’s certainly a more affecting experience than any other album I can think of in the last decade.

Big rec here I was initially drawn in by the album art (always judge a book by it's cover) and ended up completely obsessed with the hypnotic chorus & atmosphere of this one.
Had no idea it was isaac from Strange Ranger's new project until 3 minutes ago.
If love and only love can break your heart What's this tearing mine apart? Oh yeah Oh baby The years flying faster all the time I lie awake and dream all night Oh yeah Oh baby
So good
