they’re so funny when you think about it - hot air balloon : a balloon with hot air - foot path : a path for the foot - orange (the fruit) : orange - toothbrush : a brush for your tooth (singular) - fireplace : a place for fire - dishwasher : a washer of the dishes - loudspeaker : a loud speaker(?!) - waterfall : water that falls!! - earthquake : bro the earth is quaking - hairdryer : dryer of the hair like woahhhh, slow down with the creativity there!!! no need to go overboard!!! don’t use that noggin too hard!!

It’s fascinating when this also holds true for other languages. Umbrella in Spanish has always made me laugh as it’s paraguas, or para-aguas, which means “for water..” which is even funnier because it’s not describing what it is but instead what it’s intended usage is. “Oh what is that thing for?” “Oh, uh…it’s for water?”

Saw someone do this on another app, and thought it’d be a funny lil game/brain exercise: Polenta Kidney Sandal Clarinet Pie Camera Basin Fax Alimony Chlorine please add yours!!* *footnotes: these are in the realm of European-adjacent/English-speaking/North American colonial names, so I’d also love to see people do this with other languages/cultures! *I find femme names are easier so bonus for neutral/masc names!
