it‘s one of those things you can only recommend with a million caveats (namely, are you ready to make very little money? are you okay with never being able to get your job off your mind? are you down to be the center of local and national Political Discourse and Angst?) but at the end of the day, i really do Love My Job.
i teach high school math so my highlights and bright spots are a bit different than say, an elementary art teacher, but the kids really are so funny and i love watching the growth that happens throughout the course of a high schooler’s career. not just academically but personally. so much of high school isn’t just about What you want to be but Who you want to be and i love getting to be a part of that.
anyway here is a drawing a student of mine left on his test today that made me giggle—i adore these kids and they really do make the long hard frustrating days worthwhile 🫶🏻🫶🏻

🎒earlier i was all mopey (reading yeats’ “the second coming” & everything) but zoned out because some tiny happy children down the road were playing some sport & chanting for all of their friends. thank u tiny happy children!!!!!!

BUT! hear me out!!
teaching middle schoolers is a genuinely entertaining career.
i think they get such a bad rap because no one really has fond memories of being 13, which makes sense!! going from child to teen and not even really being a teen yet is difficult and confusing. not fun!
but they still have the most random childlike shenanigans that i love to be apart of.
they are little humans who shock me with an f bomb every now and then but also make me origami and paper crowns, and it gives me a reason to wake up in the morning.

🏳so epic i get to experience a range of human experience by feeling different genders day to day but also crushes your soul when you dont feel boy enough or girl enough or neutral enough. its so changing that nothing i do especially to my appearance is ever good enough to make me still feel good about it later when my gender feels completely different. but also i shouldnt complain on here, i came to this website to look on the bright side of life and find things to uplift me. so maybe ill come back and stop complaining when i find a way to please my near constant dysphoria. just felt like shouting into a void idk.
