I'm a big fan of Swiss-made Victorinox knives, you can find a range of great ones starting around $25. Depending on how many tools (don't go with too many), you've got lots of options for not much coin. My daily carry is Pioneer x Alox, pictured, which has a great blade, scissors, and a few other essentials. Looks terrific too. There are even carry on-friendly options that are bladeless and TSA approved, if that is what's needed. (Bonus: the Swiss Army style knives are generally safe to carry in any city, including those with 3" blade knife laws.) Other classy knife options are the sub-$20 Opinel Knives (made in France) or the heaftier outdoor knives from Morakniv (Sweden) — like the Companion or Kansbol.

Since I was a kid in my brother’s hand-me-down cargo shorts just playing and climbing and tying and whittling in the forest in Germany, I’ve always loved having everything you could possibly need for a myriad of hyper specific purposes on your person. My friends call me Tactical Boy. It feels very important and satisfying to have the right tools for any job. Victorinox is the golden standard; we have them to thank for the Swiss Army Knife. Then they decided to give usa version that you can slip in your wallet or the tiniest of clutches, and is TSA friendly. As an adult, the ability to file and open and tighten and pluck and fix and jot and trim and pin all from this card has saved many a moment, from fashion weeks to tour dates to camping trips.

I used to think the no.8 was the best but I picked up a no.7 at a flea market in Brussels and it is a superior tool for cutting fruit on the go, opening packages, and fighting street-toughs.

this is worthy of celebration: the lack of video—autoplay video, noisy inane video, panicky video, algorithmic, dumb video, rabbit hole video, any video—on pi.fyi is a good thing
