last night, I went to see my favorite DJ, Green Velvet, in DC. he was pretty huge in Chicago when house music was starting to become more known in the 90s, and he has a very distinct style.
seeing him reminded me that i wanted to share this video with you all. the history of house music is rich & is based on bringing people together which i find so beautiful. please give this a watch if you're interested in learning about the history of house music <3

I love to create a long ass list of mixes to listen to on YouTube (and pray that an angel has put the tracklist in the comments)
One thing I have noticed in the comments of DJ mixes, is people's pure amazement that a DJ has mixed a wide range of genres together.
I picked up DJ'ing two years ago and with that, a keen interest in the history of genres and where they originated. To be fr, the majority of music we listen to today was created by black people who were innovative against all odds. I truly believe that rhythm is intrinsic to that creative process and the reason why a lot of these genres blend so well is because of common drum patterns and melodies.
For example, I went to a salsa night and felt moved by the drum patterns of the songs being played, as they were reminiscent of the music I grew up on (Highlife, Ghana). This can be traced back to the slave trade, where Africans were enslaved and transported from Africa across to the Caribbean, taking those rhythms with them and creating new sounds that established this tangible sonic connection.
So when we witness DJ's mix Jersey Club, with Reggaeton, to Baltimore Club to Grime, to Jungle, Baile funk and back again... that's lightwork! Black people pioneered all these genres, infusing those intrinsic rhythms and unknowingly creating a formula that makes all these musical genres blend so perfectly.
So the next time you listen to a multi-genre DJ set (I'd recommend Zack Fox's Boiler Room to start) just know you are getting schooled in BLACK HISTORY!

If you're truly starting from scratch, this short documentary from the UK's Channel 4 is quite good, touching on the NYC/Philly disco roots and moving to Chicago to cover The Warehouse, Trax Records, the Muzic Box, and the birth of acid house.

i like to ponder in the shower just like everyone else. tonight's shower ponder had to do with the fact that i'm in the job search process right now and it is so disheartening to have to tailor my resume to every post and just basically do the most for every single job post just to most likely receive a rejection within a few days of applying.
i started thinking about the fact that when people accomplish something difficult in life such as finding a job, owning a house, or finishing education there tends to be 2 types of thinking that come out on the other side. the 1st way of thinking is the "well i did it alone and although it was difficult, i was able to do it alone so i think everyone else should be able to do it alone if they try hard enough" the 2nd way is "i did it alone and it was hard and i recognize that there is a need for support here therefore, i would like to change the system so that other people do not have to go thru the same hardship in the same way i did." not saying that everyone thinks like this, but i feel like these are the 2 common ways of thinking that i've heard.
& basically that was ponder as i sat there waiting to wash out my leave in conditioner.

about two weeks ago, i deleted all social media from my phone. tiktok, instagram & facebook. i truly think this was one of the best decisions i made. i find myself living my days a little less stressed and i find myself engaging in the world more.
my biggest fear before deleting the apps was that i would be completely out of touch with the world. i did feel like that for the first week, but after the 'detox' i felt better. i still stay in touch with news, i use Reuters and NPR to stay up to date as they are pretty unbiased compared to other news outlets. often i go to a site called allsides where i can see how the news is being reported across the spectrum.
every so often, i'll open instagram on my browser for a little bit and can really only stay on there for like 5 minutes. i no longer see the appeal and quite frankly it stresses me out to be on there. i am not ignorant to the things going on in the world, i have just found joy in finding out about things in a different way. i have linked the allsides website to this post, i think it's worth looking at because it is really interesting to see how different outlets report things.
