If you're truly starting from scratch, this short documentary from the UK's Channel 4 is quite good, touching on the NYC/Philly disco roots and moving to Chicago to cover The Warehouse, Trax Records, the Muzic Box, and the birth of acid house.

last night, I went to see my favorite DJ, Green Velvet, in DC. he was pretty huge in Chicago when house music was starting to become more known in the 90s, and he has a very distinct style. seeing him reminded me that i wanted to share this video with you all. the history of house music is rich & is based on bringing people together which i find so beautiful. please give this a watch if you're interested in learning about the history of house music <3

i started DJing for fun, and also to build a new relationship to music when feeling uninspired as a songwriter. in pursuing DJing more seriously, i have developed a real passion for it. i realize i am becoming part of a musical, cultural, and political history. so i've been trying to put in the work of learning more about it all, aside from just the skills of the CDJs. this series from RA highlights the importance of DJs, dance music, nightlife, and the communities they build. it's so cool to see how different cities and their social norms impact nightlife, and it gives a great intro as to why nightlife is the way it is. it's also an interesting watch considering a lot of these were made before COVID, so it's a little nostalgic, too.

I think people are far too obsessed with beyonce, drake etc bring “house” back when it never went away. House has always had its mainstream moments. Furthermore these artists are way behind on trend. The kids in clubs right now love faster 140 BPM techno and trance. People need to recognize the next thing on this trend cycle is that stripped down and or “minimal” house gonna make a comebackIm currently obsessed with french filter house at the moment. Its great uplifting music with a pretty good long history. One of my fav new producers Ejeca just dropped a french filter house homage album. Its excellent. Finally saw this for the first time (on 35mm thxx Prince Charles Cinema) and wow. Jonathan Glazer and co-writer Jean-Claude Carrière spending all of pre-production re-writing the script without informing the studio… DP Harris Savides pushing the boundaries of underexposed film and getting the craziest deepest browns and purples out of Kodak stock… Alexandre Desplat starting with what seems like a very polite classical score and then gradually bringing in heavy synth bass… and of course Nicole Kidman throwing herself headlong into an insane role (and apparently bullying the producers for more $$$ when they finished under budget)

The less you read about it (or look at maps) the better. Just enter via Haight Street, turn your phone off and wander 'til you reach the ocean. If you go on a Sunday afternoon and you didn't already come across it, proceed to turn your phone back on and track back to the 6th Avenue Skate Park to check out the roller disco party 🛼🔊😎

Because of the extensive tradition of pirate radio in the UK (from Radio Caroline on down), London probably has the most insane landscape of 24/7 internet radio in the world. I've tried to rank these in terms of approximate popularity ranging from NTS (as mentioned) on down to purely DIY weekend-only amateur collectives like LWSTD. If you don't know the stations in your city, just have a quick google and do some Instagram "Following" list exploration and it should be pretty easy to find more (e.g. in Amsterdam check out Echobox, Radio Tempo Não Pára, RRFM, etc...) - NTS (Dalston) https://www.nts.live/ - Rinse FM (Hoxton) https://rinse.fm/ - Worldwide FM (Islington) https://worldwidefm.net/ (currently mostly on ice but great archive) - Balaami (Peckham) https://www.balamii.com/ - Soho Radio https://sohoradiolondon.com/ - Reprezent Radio (Brixton) https://www.reprezentradio.org.uk/ - Netil Radio (Hackney) https://www.netilradio.com/ - Subtle Radio (Hackney) https://www.subtleradio.com/ - Voices Radio (Kings Cross) https://www.voicesradio.co.uk/ - Aaja (Deptford) https://aajamusic.com/radio/ - Do You!!
