honestly, at this point most cameras are pretty much All Excellent. unless you're a professional photographer and really care about specs, most cameras under $500 are gonna get you some great photos. the olympus e-m10 mark ii is a few years old at this point, but a steal of a deal at ~$350. it takes great photos on the regular auto setting if yr not into messing with settings, but is a really capable compact mirrorless camera. has all the bells and whistles for when you do want to fuck around with the settings. also has a nice feature where it emits a wifi signal for you to transfer photos to your phone. lens recs: i managed to snag a OM SYSTEM OLYMPUS M.Zuiko Digital 17mm F1.8 lens for a couple hundred bucks on ebay a while ago, and it makes all of your photos look incredible, especially portraits. for something cheap and fun, check out the pocket dispo lens.

My favourite camera system is still micro four-thirds from Panasonic and Olympus! There's plenty of super small bodies (eg Lumix gm1, gx800 or the Olympus Pen E line) and thin lenses to choose from. So you can really go for a super compact setup, which is also easily upgradable. And you can adapt pretty much any vintage lens! There's also nikon 1 and pentax q, which are similar concepts but even more compact. And especially the former can be found for very cheap on ebay. Haven't used those two myself tho (yet). If you want to go more into the fixed zoom lens direction I can recommend the lumix lx100 and people really like the sony rx100 line. Unfortunately the premium point and shoot market feels like it's almost dead at this point but there are soo many great ones out there on ebay from a few years ago when camera manufacturers still cared about that segment!

full auto, 72 shots per roll, incredibly well built, easily available for $100-150. tons of variants with different combos of features. the only downside to me is they are mostly scale focus which I hate but you might not! if you wanna spend about twice that, the PEN FT is less automatic but it's a full SLR so you can focus for real. i have a PEN EES-2 that the camera shop broke when i took it in for a repair, i only got to shoot one roll with it but it was absolutely the most fun roll of film ive ever shot
