I've really loved everything I've seen of Ryusuke Hamaguchi's work. His films are filled with such passion. As soon as I saw Evil Does Not Exist, I knew it'd be my favourite film of the year.
I loved the themes of man's relationship with its environment and the convergence of capital and nature into something which can not sustain itself.
Also, Eiko Ishibashi's score is incredible. My favourite of the last few years, so beautiful and hypnotic. As someone who detests glamping, the whole film really appealed to me.

And there’s some sort of parameters to my thoughts here, but I can’t quite place em—like psychosocially or maybe even metaphysically—really… but I mean, like, I didn’t include Funny Games or Salò or Come and See. There’s a reason for that, but I don’t really know what that reason is… 🤷🏻‍♂️

Unequivocally the most harrowing film I have ever seen and I cannot get it out of my head…. Deeply disturbing , anxiety inducing, compelling, stomach churning. Shot and written with effective precision, without overkill or gratuitous exploitation. Movies about the human will to survive are hard to do without being either corny or played out and this does follow a similar narrative arc but I really appreciated how it was told. I recommend watching the little docu about the making of the film. I love production. Unbelievable true story and really compelling film

Probably the last feature I watched the other night. It's on Letterboxd. Devon Green just finished it and it cost 800 dollars. He premiered it at Whammy Analog (a great place) and I admit to having a small role. I am watching Hollywood die (and I don't mind) and hope movies like this flourish. https://letterboxd.com/robertdayton/film/mid-evil-times/https://letterboxd.com/robertdayton/film/mid-evil-times/

Jazz and southern gothic. There's a reason the US has cultural dominance.

The first two lines of the chorus: 'You can never be strong, You can only be free'
Sums up everything great about Robert Pollard's songwriting. Drama, hope and disappointment.

I'm amazed no one else has mentioned the great Townes Van Zandt. This is my favourite of his, a beautiful voice and songwriter gone far too soon.
