Smithsonian Folkways compilation of Lead Belly recordings is so exceedingly long but I started listening to it and I will not quit.

Maybe more blues and maybe 1930s/40s but he inspired the folk singers of the 60s. Also Woody Guthrie ofc, but that's a given

I’ve been following the release of Colter Wall’s upcoming ā€œLittle Songsā€ since he announced it back in April, and have found each pre-release single to be beautiful in its own right. Evangelina quickly turned into the song I listen to every morning on my 5 minute drive to drop my daughter off to her daycare. We both love it and I love sharing that with her. Corralling the Blues has proper plainsman twang and a beautiful catchy little riff, but the most recent song For a Long While has the feeling of a song that’ll be in the rotation for years.

He can Play that Damn Guitar like an eloquent public speaker. He plays like he’s your grandpa telling you the most gripping and fascinating story, pausing to emphasize important details he wants you to remember and he always keeps you wanting to hear more. I’d recommend The Legend of Blind Joe Death album or Days Have Gone By Vol. 6.

there is something deeply cleansing about writing in the midst of a psychotic episode. ripping at the frayed seams of my brain feels generative. it is generative—something is created.
tips if you are interested in trying this: 1. do not reread as you go. that is something called ruminating and it is not the same as writing. 2. learn to identify what can be rehabilitated and what should be gratefully acknowledged and then discarded. don’t force your thoughts to stand the test of time. 3. do not write within the horrors if it can be avoided. let them stay beside you. they can watch and listen as you reach for something more. 4. remember to eat periodically. 5. you don’t have to polish to a shine before sharing unless you want to. but know that you are not holding a masterpiece. that is fine. you are holding something, and it fits within your palms.
