I think this is one of the best history books I’ve ever read about NYC. It’s less of a “queer history” book and more of a history book through a queer lens. Most of the book centers around my neighborhood, so it’s really amazing to learn about what was happening here 100 years ago and that my neighborhood was once gayer than I thought :’)
lmaolson great book, made me a better neighbor and a better queer. Also dramatically increased the number of fun facts i‘m able to give at any given moment.
If you ever wanted to know what it was like as someone Queer in Glasgow in the 80's, then this is the book for you. I finished it in one day. It's depressing, it's joyful, it's all the bits about falling in love for the first time, and then all the heartbreak life throws at you. The ending is *chefs kiss*, the middle is a range of every emotion. If you need a great book to hit you in the feels, then this is the one.
Weaves personal anecdotes into a tour of queer spaces spanning continents and decades — from the late 1970s to now, London to Los Angeles. The role these spaces have taken in the movement for queer liberation is explored and cut in with sensorial writing about the smell of body odor …and other things. Lin is great at making places that have long since shuttered their doors or become otherwise unrecognizable come alive on the page!
I really love Gay Talese and this is my favorite book of his. It’s kind of a history of sexuality in the United States. He even goes to this swingers resort and documents the dysfunction of communal living while it slowly ruins his own marriage.
I took it in a canon rebel g that I was lucky enough to find at an estate sale for about $20 and it’s by far my favorite pic I’ve ever taken! I think the film is like fujifilm ISO 400 or something idk but I love the colors it brings out
