Literally in the heart of the cultural desert that is Times Square lives this dive bar oasis with impeccable authentic vibes. The crowd is a beautiful melting pot of New York City. It was owned by a boxing coach for many years (RIP) so it’s full of boxing memorabilia. Somehow I find it’s one of the friendliest bars I’ve ever been to.

My good friends James Hurst and Hayden Tobin have been working their asses off for the last few years to open a bar in the east village. It’s now my favorite bar I’ve ever been to in New York. I’m so beyond proud of everyone who was involved. It’s a satisfying feeling for a place to open and so quickly feel like home. Catch me eating smash burgers and drinking cheap pints all summer long at The York.

It’s an Irish pub somehow located in the interior plaza of a FiDi housing complex. The blinds are down; the red vinyl booths are empty. There’s an octagonal painting of the Twin Towers; Tiffany lampshades; a dim back room with stained glass windows; an ancient waiter who wears a suit; a horrific porcelain leprechaun. The wings are pretty good. One of the few bars in the vicinity to predate 9/11, Byrnes is a holdout against the mass extinction of normal places for normal people to get a drink in the city. For every haunt like Forlini’s that closes we’re treated to half a dozen new TikTok-bait establishments called, like, Ghosted & Fried that serve TUNA POKE WONTON TACOS and MEXICAN STREET CORN RAVIOLI (real menu items at Beauty & Essex) to Syracuse marketing majors in Allbirds. And don’t get me started on the neon signs…Even more insidious are the places like Bernie’s that mimic suburban taverns in order to sell homesick creative directors a plate of five mozzarella sticks for $17. Skip all that, go to Byrnes.

Thanks y’all for the fire tips - I had a blast. Just put everyone’s rec’s into a google maps collection so you can find them at the linkšŸ“ My addition is the Empire Garden Restaurant in Chinatown. Built into an old vaudeville theater, the food is solid but the atmosphere is absurd and a must see.

You trusted someone with your money or your heart or both, and then that person surprises you by fucking you over. fuck! This sucks a lot and might mess you up pretty bad and make you lose faith in people, but on the other side there is the potential for new found strength as you now have *experience*. Trusting people is such an essential thing, so after getting scammed when you eventually find ways to trust people again, you’ll do it with a better sense of who to give it to and how much to give and when. That’s a powerful thing, and not easy to understand until you’ve been burned. Keep trusting, keep getting burned, but hopefully a little less so each time.

šŸ  decent living situation — awful roommates, deadbeat landlords, or psycho neighbors will make you super miserable so try to get this one locked down! šŸ«‚ homies — making new friends can take a long time, but if you commit to putting yourself out there over and over you’ll connect with some truly inspiring and amazing people šŸ¤‘ income (even a little) — yes you can get by on dumplings, no Ubers, no bars, etc. but being broke here feels particularly like a prison because most things are stupid expensive. Be on your grind and then blissfully spend it all away If you end up getting all 3 of these you’re probably gonna be hopelessly addicted to being here just like me. Welcome to NYC :)
