Sam O'Nella is just about the only YouTuber I'm not embarrassed to say I watched regularly in high school. He just dropped his longest video, and arguably his magnum opus, and I cannot recommend watching it enough. If not for the lessons to be learned or the laughs to be laughed, then just for the incredible art. He's still got it, folks!

His videos were wildly ahead of his time, and really formative to the standard I began to look for in love and friendships. The friend group which he spotlights through charismatic bits were the reason I felt like I finally knew what I was looking for when I was young and alone online. Enya Umanzor makes fun of Drew Phillip's iMac, Orion Carloto explains how to sexually choke someone, Casey Frey and Ovalle himself go on a date where it's assumed that Frey is a woman. These moments are what I return to, mentally, when searching for something to lighten the world in conversation.

this channel has become my fav on youtube. it's just a sweet little autistic man (he loves updating his audience about his special interest in trains) who makes long form video podcasts about obscure topics and historical events. his whole energy is very Nardwuar mixed with Mr Rogers. he's also got some great perspective and insights and a lot of his videos leave on a very thought provoking note. his channel made me really nostalgic when I first found it and I realized it's because it gives early youtube vibes. i miss when most of youtube was pure little dinky passion projects like this.

I wasn’t allowed to watch Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, or Disney Channel as a kid, so I watched a lot of Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, and History Channel instead. YouTube video essays have filled that media niche for me in my adult life. I recently found Tor’s channel and he’s quickly become a favorite source of video essays. His content explores internet rabbit holes, historical curios, and his own special interests, and he provides excellent insight and analysis. He’s a self-proclaimed “slut for nuance” and I appreciate his perspectives a lot. His videos are very old-YouTube (think the early seasons of Good Mythical Morning) and are basically video podcasts. If you want some wholesome, clickbait-free, low production but well researched long form videos, go like and subscribe and hit the bell icon.

One of the few apps with no ephemeral "story" feature or whatever so you don't need to check it every 24 hours. Cherish this.

It's just like John Swartzwelder said: "Since writing is very hard and rewriting is comparatively easy and rather fun, I always write my scripts all the way through as fast as I can, the first day, if possible […] Then the next day, when I get up, the script’s been written. It’s lousy, but it’s a script. The hard part is done."
