i could be considered the ghibli version of a disney adult but without hoarding themed stuff. i go to gkids every year. ok- this depends on how you define underrated.. the boy and the heron? so underrated. if you haven’t, watch it because it’s all the things a ghibli movie is: top tier animation, sobering themes, cozy/low stimulation scenes, character decisions that catch you off guard. they’re so good at telling a story. whisper of the heart is the cutest little low stim comfort film about falling in love. it’s a warm hug like totoro (without the dying mother :/) the cat returns is not low stim but it’s fun and cheeky in a way the others aren’t. it gives me princess bride vibes i can’t explain why.

1. Princess Mononoke— I obviously knew about this movie whenever a Ghibli conversation would come up, but i recently got around to watching cause it was re-released in theaters. WOW, low-key violent, irreverent, and deep as hell. Definitely the most mature Miyazaki film. It's also the kind of film that other properties stole from, I'm thinking The Last Airbender and Zelda. Would recommend to anyone who’s on the fence about anime (if you consider Ghibli anime). 2. Okja— Bong Joon Ho, Hilarious, Animal rights but not in a preachy way. Super cool. You might be Vegan after. 3. Opus— My last two spots could go either way. I thought Opus was a really cool critique of celebrity culture. Ayo slays, and it has the dude that play’s the hotel manager from the first season of White Lotus, he also slays. Reminded me a lot of midsummer but like actually funny not uncomfortable funny. 4. Mickey 17— Cool, funny, Toni Collette is a gem. Original. Class commentary. I want a spinoff about their food.

A list of movies that I thought were childhood fever dreams for way longer than a reasonable amount of time. In order of rewatchability: Fantasia (1940) - one of the more stunning and gripping animations you can view as a child. Frolicking and making wine with centaurs? Walking brooms? Ghostly spirits riding on skeleton horses? A devil casting demons into a pit of dancing fire? Not so much these days. The Dark Crystal (1982) - Jim Henson went off on this one. Elf characters. Bird creatures in a cave. I might need to rewatch, it's so cool. Dream. Labyrinth (1986) - David Bowie, M.C Escher stairs, trolls. Dream. Bed Knobs and Broomsticks (1971) - beds are flying and empty armor is moving. That's a dream. Nothing But Trouble (1991) - They really swung for the fences with this one. Dan Akroyd eats a hotdog disgustingly, has a dick-shaped nose and is the father of giant pig children that live in an old mansion with secret passage ways and a junk yard maze. Nightmare. The Brave Little Toaster (1987) - animated kitchen appliances. You can't fool me, that's a dream. The Journey of Natty Gan (1985) - this is more of a vague memory of a movie than a dream, but I couldn't remember the name or find it forever. Little Monsters (1989) - secret world of dudetacular monsters under your bed. Dream. The Blue Bird (1940) - trippy sequences, fairies, depiction of children lounging among greek columns waiting to be born. That's a dream.

ik only allowing one image per rec is part of the vibe but it would be cool if you could sorta chain image recs together, twitter style. mostly I’m just trying to make painting recs in the future without it being a hassle
