Rec'd on 🪴 Underrated ghibli movies + why you should watch?

i could be considered the ghibli version of a disney adult but without hoarding themed stuff. i go to gkids every year. ok-
this depends on how you define underrated..
the boy and the heron? so underrated. if you haven’t, watch it because it’s all the things a ghibli movie is: top tier animation, sobering themes, cozy/low stimulation scenes, character decisions that catch you off guard. they’re so good at telling a story.
whisper of the heart is the cutest little low stim comfort film about falling in love. it’s a warm hug like totoro (without the dying mother :/)
the cat returns is not low stim but it’s fun and cheeky in a way the others aren’t. it gives me princess bride vibes i can’t explain why.

Boy and the Heron was the first Miyazaki film I’ve gotten to see released in theatres. not only does it hit as his “last“ but the spectacle of it all is just so warm and specific. Also shoutout to the academy museum for playing most of his discography at their theatre.

Love it!!! These past weeks I’ve been religiously only watching ghibli movies with my boyfriend, we’re watching all of them and also repeating some we really liked. i haven’t thought of the “ghibli adult” term but it’s really on point lol. The boy and the heron I watched twice at the movies!! Im waiting for it to get to streaming so I can delicately see every detail cause I think it can become my fav ghibli movie

Most underrated ghibli movie : whisper of the heart

i luv this movie so damn much 😭😭 I feel like so many romance movies place ppl’s ‘Personal legend’ ///career or passions, to be less important than a partner … which is more important or if one is, idk?.. BUT to finally see a movie where the main character places so much importance on her passions is beautiful … or to atleast be content with what she does in life before pursuing a relationship…
and yes…. Their love story IS also really cute :,) it’s just balanced really nicely and different to usual

Castle in the sky

I’m not sure if this one counts as underrated but it’s my favourite!
the music (esp the opening scenes), the dynamic between Pazu and Sheeta (Pazu is the sweetest ghibli hero imo), giant robots, ancient floating castles, the usual ghibli focus on nature, love, friendship, etc etc
oh and of course the old lady sky pirate and her band of idiot sons
another honourable mention has gotta be Nausicaä

Whisper of the heart

one of my favorite movies ever… it’s about a girl discovering herself, what she wants to do and how to get there. It’s so delicate and human It’s also top animation, Tokyo in the 90s, cat themed, and you got the realest most sweet romance you will want to throw up while watching it I’ll stop now but I could write a book about this movie… maybe i feel specially connected to this film bc im also lost at life but still a ghibli must watch
